Hi guys,
my contribution to the group build will be this little beauty.
Currently I am studying drawings and thinking about how to divide the fuselage correctly into sections - this will be my first build with a fuselage of this complicated shape, so please keep your fingers crossed for me.
Hope to post photos on progress during tomorrow.
Cheers
Ondra
-
Excellent Ondra, I most certainly will be following this build to see how you do it in such a small scale.
Des.
-
Following with great interest Ondra :)
-
Well, very little progress, but the slow and steady wins the race, right? :)
The very beginning on the fuselage and the propeller hub.

Ondra,
Great start! What you do in this scale is truly amazing and I look forward to watching you progress with your build!

Incredible workmanship in such a small scale, well done so far.

Many thanks for your nice comments, dear all, they are a great encouragement to me.
I keep working on the fuselage, the cockpit will be really chalenging. I downloaded the WNW instructions to use them as a guideline and have to say that the Albie will be totally different from any of my previous builds as to construction.

And the best - these six little beauties arrived last Thursday, 3D printed Mercedes D.IIIa from Bo Monroe's Flugzeugwerke. They are real little gems, many thanks, Bo, you did a great job. How was the song from elementary school? One little, two little, three little Mercedes. :)

Hope to find some time next week and to start working on details like pilot's seat, MG's, engine and cooler.
Many thanks in advance for any advices or comments.

You have done a superb job on the fuselage so far Ondra, and the wings and tail look very impressive, great looking engines.
Des.
-
Ondra, I am amazed at what can be done in such a tiny scale!
You are off to a great start. Well done!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Outstanding work Ondra.
Martin

I can't emphasize enough how much I admire your scratch building in this TINY scale! I have found myself struggling with my Eduard 1/48th build recently ::)
RAGIII
-
Excellent! Your scratch building with Bo's engines will create an exceptional model in this minute scale!! :D
George
-
Many thanks to all of you for looking in and leaving such nice comments.
Last evening while studying photographs I noticed I am actually building a D.V, not D.Va, at least it looks like that from this photo. I do not see any control wires going from the lower wing to the ailerons. Am I right?
-
Many thanks for the confirmation, Red Baron.
I assume the fairings on the lower side of the upper wing looked the same as on the upper side, correct?
-
Yeah in 1:144 the fairings will be basically identical top and bottom, although in fact they are not quite so in 1:1 (or 1:32). There are excellent detail photos of the fairings on the WNW site in the archive photos section of the DV kit page...
-
This is simply astounding.
Bravo, Ondra!
Cheers from NYC,
Michael

Hello everybody, once again many thanks for your support and positive comments, I will admit I always smile like an idiot while reading them. :)
Please let me share the photos of Bo's Mercedes D.IIIa in 1:144, now in black primer which shows much more clearly, how incredible they look. I am really astonished by what Bo has created.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/IMG_0116_zpszhki8iqu.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/IMG_0116_zpszhki8iqu.jpg.html)

I had no time to get to my workbench at the weekend, so only a very slight progress on the build:
I prepared the sandwich of black and white styrene for the carved propeller:
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/IMG_0120_zpsigald6s5.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/IMG_0120_zpsigald6s5.jpg.html)
...and made very first steps on the Spandaus:
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/IMG_0123_zpsxggd2oqy.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/IMG_0123_zpsxggd2oqy.jpg.html)
Cheers
Ondra
-
Very beautiful.
Martin
-
OK, in my ignorance, I must ask: why a B&W sandwich for the propeller?
Warren
-
Fair point, Warren, sorry for the missing description.
I always admired the gorgeous carved laminated props on larger scales and was wondering how to achieve a similar result in 1:144. As I am not really good at working with brush, the results of attempts on painted layers of dark wood did not look good.
As I can not use light and dark wood in this small scale, I use thin sheets of white and black plastic welded together in a B&W sandwich, here a few photos of the prop I made for the Hansa-Brandenburg:
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/DSC01097_zpsb8rnl9xe.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/DSC01097_zpsb8rnl9xe.jpg.html)
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/DSC01099_zpsamw6puno.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/DSC01099_zpsamw6puno.jpg.html)
This was the first attempt and I had to admit that the particular layers were way too thick, but after using thinner plastic, I was quite satisfied with the result:
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/P1140032_zpsaa07b694.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/P1140032_zpsaa07b694.jpg.html)
Far from perfect, but still better than previous pieces.
Cheers
Ondra
-
OK, so you are making the sandwich, carving the prop, and then applying a thin stain or thinned paint?
I ask, because in 1/72nd, I cannot use layers of wood either. (I tried, but I wasn't able to source it.) I'd like to try this in 1/72nd.
Warren
-
You are right, I just apply a thin coat of oil paint (it was yellow ochre in case of the H-B D.I) in the same way as creating the wood effect.
I think this method could work well for your scale, should you need any support, just let me know, will be happy to help.
Cheers
Ondra
-
it is amazing what you acheive in such a tiny size. cheers.
-
I'm sure going to try it Ondra, thanks so much for the explanation.
Warren
-
It's an extremely clever idea, btw Ondra. 10 bonus points awarded.
-
It's an extremely clever idea, btw Ondra. 10 bonus points awarded.
Thank you very much for the compliment, sir. :)
The idea was inspired by Sergey Mertens, a few months ago he explained me the "colour perception" from the artistic point of view and that brought me to this.
The very initial intention was to use a sandwich of yellow and red sheets - you need warm colours as brown (which is the final colour you wish) is a warm colour too. Unfortunately, I have not found a proper source for styrene sheets in the colours I need. That's why I had to use black and white, even for the black styrene I have to use coffee-to-go caps. :) Actually I broke all the rules Sergey explained me as I am using cool colour (white) under warm colours.
To WarrenD: If you want to try this method, I can really recommend you to search for yellow and red plastic sheets, the result will look much better. I you are fortunate to find a place to buy them, would be great if you could let me know.
-
Thanks for that Ondra, I'll keep an eye out for those colors!
Now, hmmm . . . . . what would the lamination thickness of an Axial prop on a Fokker Triplane come out to in 1/72nd . . . . . ::)
Warren
-
Thanks for that Ondra, I'll keep an eye out for those colors!

Warren
Something around .010", no?
-
I can't remember Bo. I'll just have to sit down with my Eduard kit, or somesuch, and do the math! :)
And now, . . . back to Ondra's wonderful build.
Warren
-
I always tend to use the simplest methods available, therefore when calculating the thickness of particular layers, I just take a drawing of the aircraft in 1:144 scale and measure the total thickness of the propeller. In the second step I look at photos and count the number of lamination layers (btw. is this the correct word, "layer"?). The rest is very simple math. :)
-
Layer = Lamination ;)
I see, many thanks. ;) I am sorry for my english, some expressions are just way too special. But I keep on learning. :)
-
Ondra, your English is just fine, much better than my students, and supposedly they are native speakers with 16-24 years experience. :-\ ::) :)

One of my best memories of college is the year I took of German and my professor. He was a great man. As for me, I just try to get them to a minimum level of functional literacy. Many of them honestly lack the horsepower to pull the hill to be honest. While it's rewarding on one hand, it's also highly discouraging.
Warren

Ondra, your ability to create such tiny masterpieces amazes me! Great stuff so far; very creative.
Chris

Many thanks for all comments and for looking in, gentlemen.
The weekend was rather busy, so I only achieved a very small progress on a few parts:
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/IMG_0126_zpsasni20qo.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/IMG_0126_zpsasni20qo.jpg.html)
This is just the first coat of oil paint on the propeller, further slightly darker will follow.
Seat and seat cover basically finished:

Exceptional work Ondra on the propeller and seat cushion, hard to believe that they are a tiny 1:144 scale.
Des.

Many thanks, Chris, Terri, Martin, Rick, Ernie and Des, your positive comments really mean a lot to me.
A lot of filing and sanding on the fuselage done and another lot ahead. :) But at least she has started taking the shape of an Albie.

The seat is finished and I am quite satisfied with the result:

I started working on the cockpit sides, unfortunately I am not able to take good photos. There is the first coat of yellow ochre oil paint, actually the woodgrain looks a bit smoother, still I am not happy about the woodgrain, perhaps further coats of oil paints will help improve the result.

ALBATROS1234: slightly smaller, it is 8 x 6 mm.

Astonishing work, Ondra! All that tiny detail! I would go blind.

Many thanks for looking in and leaving such a nice comment, Bud!
Not much work done in between, the tropical weather hier in Czechia is a real killer of modelling enthusiasm.
Nevertheless, I made some parts for the interior, there will only be very basic details as little will remain visible once the fuselage is closed.
I added a toothpick to create the scale effect. :D

One learning is that I have to invent a better method for making gauges, they are darn tiny and do not look really convincing.
I hope not to regret that I have not added more detail, most probably I will think it over once again.
Cheers
Ondra

Astonishing detailing, Ondra.

I saw the new Marvel movie Ant-Man a couple of weeks ago - the lead character had a device to communicate with/"command" ants to do his bidding...surely Ondra has one of these too?!
Stunning work, what a beautiful little model!

Ondra,
"Honey I Shrunk The Albatros" Outstanding piece of scratch work my friend. And here I thought 1/72 was tiny! Pure artistry and awesome skill set,not to mention eye sight. Keep up the AMAZING progress my friend.

Brilliant interior work! Your details in this scale are amazing, no matter what you think you see that isn't good enough!
RAGIII

Hello everybody, first of all many thanks for your pleasant and encouraging comments, they mean a lot to me.
As my crew of ants left for summer vacation, I closed the fuselage. :) The amount of detail inside seems to be ok, actually only one gauge, the steering stick and the seat are visible. There is a huge amount of filing and sanding ahead of me but the shape of the fuselage seems to be basically correct.

My new Proxxon Micromot arrived today so I tested it right away and made a new propeller cone (hope this is the correct word...). The first impression on the new tool is that it is worth every last cent.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/IMG_0334_zpsmqzzekwe.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/IMG_0334_zpsmqzzekwe.jpg.html)
And this is the very beginning on the lower wings, the ribs are glued on and I sprayed a thicker coat of surfacer on the leading edges to simulate the plywood cover. Hopefully this will remain visible after sanding as I have to reduce the thickness of the ribs.

neat to see the 1/144th merc get used!

Ondra,
I'll clime in with Bo and George on the plywood shade and those tiny merc's. All and all outstanding update my friend. Over the many years I've held those who work wonderous magic in 1/72 scale in the highest regards. But after enjoying your works in 1/144 scale I now hold those such as yourself who work wonderous magic in this tiny of tiniest scale with the same highest regards. Well Done and keep up the great work.

You have no clue how much I appreciate your positive and helpful comments, guys, thanks a lot!
I was not very happy about the propeller so I decided to make a new one using a sandwich of red and white and plastic sheets. Only the front side has been filed to shape so far, I will see what it will look like with the woodgrain on it. But I think this one is much closer to the right shape and lamination look.

Ondra,
I have to really work at it to hand carve my 1:32 Scale props, this is just amazing! :o And also with your own laminate, good grief, you are doing miracle work here! I thought I'd seen your best with the seat and harness done in this scale, but this work is even more impressive, Great modelling, and your little ant workers deserve a vacation, hope you're paying their way! ;)
Keep up the outstanding work.
Cheers,
Lance

Hard to put into words what I'm seeing here, absolutely incredible is an understatement. What you did with the cockpit and then the wings and fuselage and the fitting of the tiny amazing engine and now, the propeller, you are a true magician Ondra.

I am really glad you like the result so far, it is a great encouragement for me, many thanks!
Eventually I decided to choose a different camo, as Bäumer's kite would be really difficult to paint (especially the Edelweiss on the fuselage side and the red outlines on the green tail). That is why I will build Manfred's machine and I would like to ask you for advice.
I will use the DB Kraplak for the red parts and would like to use its translucency effect to show the various colours underneath. Is there any reliable information on what specific scheme was under the red colour on this particular machine? Means green-mauve, green-reddish brown-pale green etc.? Many thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers
Ondra
-
Green / mauve. I think the red brown had been completely phased out by the time the D.V went into production.
-
Thanks for the quick help, Bo! I saw a few photos of D.Va's with red brown on upper wing but I share your opinion, red brown on D.Va's is very rare and I assume those upper wings were simply cannibalised from D.IIIs.
I will go for mauve - green - mauve on wings and on tail too, hopefully that will not be completely wrong. So far I have not been able to find any system in the colour combination.
-
Looking forward to you continuing with this build Ondra, it looks excellent.

Des, many thanks for moving the thread!
My apologies to all for the long time off the forum. Last weeks were very busy in the professional as well as personal area.
Some progress on the fuselage, it is almost ready for painting, I already applied the greyish green using the DB paints. The zinc white has very good covering, which is why the fuselage was really difficult to photograph - the white is too shiny. :) Another consequence is that the greyish green appears rather dark on the photos.

As mentioned before, I used Bo's 3D printed Mercedes D.III engines, they are really excellent! I just added the exhaust painting it with Caput Mortuum and a coat of Prussian blue to simulate the burnt metal at the end of the exhaust.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/IMG_0534_zpsrojxftzk.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/IMG_0534_zpsrojxftzk.jpg.html)

For the wings I used DB paints as well, I want to take advantage of the translucent effects of Kraplak, that is why I took a bit more care than might be necessary. I tried to apply preshading on both side of the wings, on the upper side it will definitely disappear under the coat of red, but the contrast of varying base colours should remain visible.

Dear friends,
first of all please let me thank you all for the great support and help you gave me this year and wish you all the best for the upcoming one!
I used the vacation this week and made a little progress on my Albie.
I am not very happy with the radiator and will give it another try, we will see what the result will look like. One question to Albatros experts - what colour was the radiator? Was it the typical Albatros greyish-green?
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/IMG_0617_zpsod4sxoki.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/IMG_0617_zpsod4sxoki.jpg.html)
I prepainted the camouflage on the tail to use the translucency of DB Kraplak, should make a nice effect. Stil not sure though whether I will not change my mind and build Bäumer's D.V from Jasta 5 anyway...

to WarrenD: Yes, correct, I used the sandwich method. Finally I have found red plastic sheets, Hellboy helped me find a method to sand the 1mm sheet to 0.1 mm thickness. It was a very positive surprise to me how good it looks with light ochre oil paint wood effect applied on it.

Ondra -- awesome work as always.
According to my sources the radiator should be dull silver --they were double-dipped in molten solder and left unpainted.

@WarrenD: please PM me your adress, I will send you some red plastic from my stock.
@Bo: I knew you would come around to help me, thanks a lot! This really is a great help, I studied all the photos I have but the radiatior is barely visible on almost all, not even speaking about the color. Replicas are mostly showing the radiator in greyish green, but those are still replicas...

Ok, decision taken, it will be Bäumer's kite, the green tail is really cool (besides that, I already have one of Manfred's machines in my collection).
Basically all the previous effort on the tailplanes disappeared under the coat of green, but nevermind, I love that shade. It showed some flaws which will require a touch-up.

Hello everybody,
not much time for the workbench recently, so I just made a slight progress on the lower wings - markings applied using masks. Not perfect but I can live with it. I will have to rework the inspection panels - the first version was made using 0.1 mm styrene sheet, but those were too thick, so I will replace them with panels made of aluminium foil.

Many thanks for looking and leaving such a nice comment, Jeroen.
Some progress on the fuselage - originally I thought the dark stripe on the fuselage was painted with caput mortuum, but Sergey had made a research on this machine before and found out this plane originally had a black stripe on the fuselage, which was later on overpainted with red with black showing through. Masking was quite difficult but I like the result. I am having difficulties downloading photos from my phone (Windows 10 still needs to get some bugs fixed, obviously...), hope to post more photos with progress tomorrow.

Masking the tail was really difficult, eventually I used a combination of 0,4 mm masking stripes cut from Kabuki and the elastic Tamiya masking tape (great stuff, btw.) and Winsor and Newton masking fluid. The outlines should be a tick thinner, I assume, on the other hand I have to say I like the look of it. Rudder did not work out very well and will have to be repainted.

Many thanks for your nice comments, Martin, Rick and Des, they are highly appreciated!
Decals are in place, I tried to make a sort of "preshading" on the wooden part of the fuselage using aquarel crayons, afterwards I will smoothen them with wet brush to reduce the contrast. The wooden panels should not be really visible in this scale, therefore I would like to achieve very soft differences between the particular plywood panels.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/IMG_0641_zpskqyrrzkw.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/IMG_0641_zpskqyrrzkw.jpg.html)
The upper wing also got decals and I added the aileron fairings - they are not really visible on the photos, but they are there. :) Still thinking about the radiator, I might give it one more try and make a new one, I am not really happy with this one.

I have only just found this thread and I am totally amazed at what you have achieved in such a small scale.
