I have begun to work on some of the basics of the WNW Sopwith Triplane. So far just a little work on interior framework and wing struts. I started with a base of CDL using Valejo paints then over painted with delta Ceramicoat Acrylic ceramic paint. The wood grain is a mixture of burnt sienna and raw sienna brushed on then wiped off leaving a film and hint of grain.

Thanks Bud! I am doing scheme E, a Sopwith built bird. I am looking at paints for the overall scheme right now. So far a mixture of Humbrol 10 gloss service brown and Humbrol 186 flat brown is high on my list of choices. I think I want to lean heavily into the "chocolate" spectrum, but not real sure about PC13 vs 10.

Nice start! Looking forward to future updates.

Thanks Gregory! I am in the process of trying out different out of bottle and mixes of paint for the "Chocolate" brown overall finish. I will try to show some samples if the weather permits opening my window to vent the airbrush fumes.

Hi Rick,
Looks great ! I started my Tripe a few weeks ago but it`s the Roden kit . I`m still triying to figure out the PC10 color . Be waiting for your results .

Willi
Willi,
I have opted for Humbrol #10 Gloss Service brown as my base. I will mix with Humbrol #186, flat brown for some weathering techniques.
I hope you post your progress on your Roden build. Roden kits get bashed a bit but 4 out of my 6 completed 1/32nd builds are Roden!
RAGIII
PS: Pictures of my test painting later

Thanks Rick,
I use that as my guide . I was hoping for a water base paint , I don't want to get too high while painting :). I `m thinking of doing the WNW`s captured Sopwith . Rick if you can give me the measurements of the crosses it would help . Also the length of the prop spinner . that would help a lot !
I`ll be watching your build !

Willi, Send me a PM with your Mailing address. I am not going to use the captured Triplane markings so would be happy to send them. I will look at the spinner. If supplied in the kit I will send that also.

I am about 90 per cent done with my WNW Sopwith Triplane and like you, am doing scheme E and used Humbrol #10 brown slightly lightened with some semi gloss white.
I'm a brush painter but was fortunate to have an old tin of Humbrol 10 ( from the days when Humbrol enamels brushed like a charm). The model looks great with Humbrol 10. I use a blend of Pollyscale Flat and Satin finishes to give the model a suitable doped sheen and the end result is really nice.
Two build issues to beware of - as with the WnW Sopwith Pup, the fuselage with the cockpit tub installed, will not allow a flush fit with the lower wing. The cockpit tub protrudes too low. You have to shave off a good slice of the under cockpit tub assembly to get a good fuselage/ wing fit. A Dremel and wet and dry paper are your friends here. Plus lots and lots of test fitting.
The other design flaw is in the upper cockpit coaming. It will not fit between the cabane struts when the fuselage is glued together. You have to leave one side of the upper cockpit tub loose until you install the coaming then glue the sides together from under the coaming. Annoying but fixable.
Enjoy the build!
cheers

Here is the result of my paint experiment: I have decided to go with a mixture of Humbrol 10 and 186. (Right side of tailplane). The left side is straight Humbrol 10, and the middle is the Tamiya red brown,
RAGIII
PS: The Humbrol 10 looks much more BROWN in real life ::)

Rick , Is PC10 a brown color or is it a Kaki ? The Roden kit gives the paint color as Model Master 2050 matt ww1 green. I`m confused ::).

Willi, WELCOME to one of the Largest debates known to WW1 modelers! That being said My Personal opinion on MOST aircraft with PC 10 is a faded US Olive Drab 41, a color that looks brown in some lighting and greener in others. With the Triplane I am going with the more "Chocolate" brown as seen on surviving samples. Could be PC 12. WNW give this in all of their directions: PC10/12. In other words make up your own mind! Drop in on the Aerodrome forum and search PC 10, you will be treated to a plethora of heated debates regarding the "True" color of PC10. :-X

Ah yes, I remember that 2 month long thread although you bowed out gracefully half way through ;D It was wild and ultimately inconclusive. There are fairly wide guidlines to PC10. Anyone know what color these pipes are ? My guess is copper tubing but I admit to having no real knowledge ::)
RAGIII
-
Pipes are copper but the fittings and fuel gauge (vertical parts) appear to be brass, the centre portion is a tube with a glass section in it which appears to be backed in white to show the fuel level against. Of course these may have been painted black perhaps as well.
Hope this helps Keith

Thanks Keith, the info does help. Now a general question, Chris please chime in if you have reached this point. It seems to me that the WIDE lap belts supplied in the PE are WAY..... too big, and wide ? What is the consensus?
RAGIII
-
I thought that the belts seemed very wide too Rick, and they virtually cover the entire seat cushion. I thought I did a decent job painting the cushion and now it's hidden from sight. Drat!
Cheers,

Hi there,
I ordered the HGW belts for my Tripe and if I recall correctly, they were smaller than the WNW PE belts. In the end, I used the PE as I didn't think I could do a good job with the HGW ones. Don't know which are the correct size though.
BTW, your Tripe looks great so far. Looking forward to more.

A quick question that perhaps Dave or Chris can answer. Is it necessary to paint the inside prtion of the instruments white, or are the instrument dials(black) already backed in white?
RAGIII
-
Answered my own question, painted the white background but it wasn't necessary. WNW backed the black with white. A small update to be followed by pictures later. having been forewarned about the cockpit coaming not fitting once the sides are assembled and glued I sought a solution. I noticed that on the twin Vickers option WNW has you cut the coaming at the joint where wood would meet metal. I figured what can I lose so did that on the single Vickers coaming. Worked like a charm! The cutting allows the modeler to just slide the coaming into place with both sides secured to the fuselage and instrument panel/ammo box/ oil tank. A very small gap occurs that could be easily filled if the modeler feels it is necessary.

A couple of pictures to illustrate my progress. Interior framework is glued to right fuselage, left fuselage and cockpit caoming placed in position on the other photo.

Thanks Bud, It seems that WNW has a standard lap belt for all of their British kits. To me they look overlarge. As for the painting of the belts they are the simplest I have ever done. A Valejo beige and Citadel Brown color. I will get the specific colors later or tomorrow.

I have glued the fuselage halves together as of this morning. I must say that I haven't had to sand and modify that much to get a good fuselage to wing fit. Side panels are installed and I am ready for the next step, Pre painting a few things to lessen the degree of masking on the struts and cockpit before installing the coaming.
Pictures later tonight.

Took a couple of days longer than expected. The color you will see is my final mix of Humbrol X10 and #186. I have brush painted around the areas I do not relish masking, the section immediately under the coaiming and the coaming itself. This will allow me to airbrush without masking around the struts.Sorry the pics are little dark.

PS: coaming is just sitting in place, not glued yet !

Thank you Gregory. I am still not sure if this is PC 10 or 12 8) All I know is WNW gives both as options listing brown as the color but saying PC 10/12 in all directions. I am in the green shift school normally for PC 10. That being said I have always heard, and surviving samples seem to verify, that the tripes were of the Chocolate variety! So.... when I get around to building an SE5a, look for something a little more Olive brown/green. RLM 81 is looking better and better Willi :-)

OK Steve you caught me ;D I might have played with My Grand Daughter and Barbie and Ken in between wires :-X
Seriously though, I tend to rig then plan, then rig, and plan, etc. so the actual hands on time could be less. As for the turnbuckle wires that was a straight up time spent with my ham fisted inadequacies :-*

Best
Mark
Thanks Mark. Getting very close now. Perhaps I will finish it off on my next off work rotation :-\

Here is where I got to after my 3 days off of work. All of the rigging except the Ailerons from the horns to the wings is done. After the upper wing decals are applied I will go nack and Paint all appropriate parts gloss black.

Thanks for the comments on my Tripe! As for the roll and maneuverability, it was good enough to have the Germans scrambling to produce their own Tri plane ;D

So I have added the upper wing roundel sections that were missing, put some washes and weathering on the wings, and just about finished all of the rigging. I hope to take some photos soon. Just the control wires for the ailerons to do now, then final satin and flat finishes. ;D

Nice Tripe Sir!
You may have inspired me to finally have a crack at the Roden version that's been gathering dust on the shelf.

Rick,
I've known you through your many Outstanding projects for years and I honestly believe this Tripe is your best yet my old friend. Of coarse this would only apply until you out do yourself. Which no doubts you will.

Gregory and Bud,
Thanks for your comments and support! I appreciate your opinions greatly! In the end it is a build I have enjoyed. Unusual for me in that I usually build 19,43 or 56 squadron birds for the British side, or should I say that is my overall plan :-*
