So I am waiting on some PE turnbuckles for My SPADs and figured I might as well do a little bit of work on My next Dual Build project. I am going to build the CSM NIeuport 23 and the Roden Pfalz DIII. I figured I would represent two companies that are still active in supporting our Niche of the Hobby in 1/32nd scale!

Tagging along for this one ....There's a Pfalz being built ;)
Terri

RAGIII,
This will be another delightful dual build to follow. Both model
companies deserve your treatment.
Kevin

One first row seat please!
:-)

Promising double build, great subjects!
Ciao

You can only do mini-group builds, right?
This only increases the difficulty, because you must not mix up any parts, but well - everybody as he likes!
I'm definitely in. Good luck!
Cheers,
Frank

Looks like you're over your 'loss of mojo' you had a while back!
-
Great combo! Your productivity is as impressive as your results. Have fun Rick! We certainly will. ;D
Best regards,
Bob
-
Thanks Guys and Gal! I will try not to let you down ::)

You are a model-making machine Rick! Multiple builds seem to be your forte - I just hope that you do not run out of space in the near future as you have such a marvellous collection of models.
Stephen.

Thanks Stephen, although lately it seems I am a Model "Starting Machine" ;D
RAGIII

A small beginning: I have sanded off the raised tank on the left side of the upper wing on the Pfalz I and sprayed a base coat for the wood finsih on the CSM Nieuport 23.

thanks Terri. You are of course correct about the Mistake and I have corrected My Post 😂

looking forward to seeing these come together, you'll have them finished by the end of the weekend right? ;) :D

You are definitely a glutton for punishment...I'm sure you will master both!!

You, Rick, are a MACHINE!!!

Thanks all for the comments! I did a little oil work today. Going for a darker look to match the one in the Brussels Museum: Perhaps a coat of clear orange or yellow once dry.

Clear orange with a touch of brown should do the trick . That is a really nice effect Rick , How dark do you want to go ?
Terri

What a great project, I like the choice of Roden and CSM kits now that WNW are gone. Great subjects too.

Thanks Richie. Like I said I chose these two for that Very Reason!
RAGIII
And a small update. I did an overspray of Tamiya clear yellow/orange then added som burnt umber oil washes for an "Oily" look. Still a bit to do.

and a little on the Pfalz: I began to correct what I thought was a "Short Shot". I have since been informed that the area was to allow for the exhaust and was common for the kit...not a mistake. So before I "Un- correct" My repair is this like the ledge molded on almost all Albatros kits that wasn't really there or should the rectangular section indeed be cut away ??

Yes, nice wood effects on the panels.
Thanks Ken. Today I will start assemble or work on the Pfalz. Haven't decided yet :-\
RAGIII

Good start with wood painting!
I have also a rare Pfalz D.III kit from Eduard in my stash. The D.IIIa was often released, but not the D.III
The good thing is we don't need full weapons, since only the fronts of the 08/15 are visible :D
Cheers,
Frank
-
Good progress Rick, and as usual all at high speed with no detrimental impact on quality. The wood tones are very good.
Stephen.
-
Great work as usual, Rick, if you refer to the "ledge" meaning the piece you replaced with a white plasticard one, well I saw on all the DIII photos and profile that the housing of the MGs was completely closed and just the end of the barrel was visible...
Antonio
-
Looking good! What was/is it with the tank on the Pfalz wing? Should it not be there, or will it be replaced by PE or something?

Yes, the DIII has the guns mostly internal. If Eduard has it correct, I checked MY Old DIII kit, I need to fix the opening although it is molded correctly for this kit and not a "Short Shot".

Thanks Stephen. I have to fill time until the PE arrives for the SPAD rigging 8)

Going back to My question re the Roden Right fuselage. I am convinced that I did not have a "Short Shot" on the fuselage and that this is common to the Roden Mold. That being said the attached photo shows the Eduard 1/48th DIII fuselage. Did they get it right? I am also adding a photo that Stephen T. Lawson posted on My Face Book Page. I am a bit slow at picking out details so what do you Guys, and Gal think?

There is no telling since the cabane hides the top of the little peeky outie hole in the photo. Also that could have been something that was a field mod. Mechanics could have opened up the top for easier access to the end of the gun barrel and any attachment hardware or in response to overheating if the gun was fired too long. Since one model company got it one way and another got it the other, it is possible this was a mod not used on every machine and using different sources both Roden and Eduard got it right.

It is said, do not go to the Elves for advice as they will tell you both yes and No. ::) I guess the same applies to Modelers ;D Good Points though SP!
RAGIII
PS: One other interesting thing is that when I enlarged the photo from Stephen I really couldn't make out any Noticiable grooves in the inner fuselage like provided in the WNW DIIIa. What do you all think?
-
I feel there would not be heavy grooves on the inside as WNW have in their Pfalz but still some evidence of the wood strips that make up the shell maybe?
-
Thanks for the great photos. I think I might try just doing some washes to simulate the variances in the interior. I also received a reply from Stephen Lawson indicating Eduard got the fuselage right so I will go with My correction.
RAGIII
-
yeah that is probably a solid way to go.
though the more I look at that Pfalz DVIII shell I wonder if there were fabric tapes glued over each crack where the boards met? Of course maybe that was a later thing that they did not do on the earlier DIII. Or maybe I am just seeing things :)
-
Ooh, nice to see this pairing, Rick!
-
Rick , on the inside of the fuselage you are correct . There shouldn't be any grooves at all on the inside of the fuselage . Earlier production runs of Pfalz aircraft stripes of cloth covered the joins and doped . On later production run aircraft the taping was dropped and sanded smooth such as on the D.VII . The inside could have been cleared varnished or painted . I really don't think there is any set rule to how the inside was painted at the time so it is open to your own intertupation .
Terri

Thanks All! Now that My thinking is over I am going to try to do a little Modeling today 8)
RAGIII

Never a seamless transition. I'm going through the same today restarting work on a model that has sat for a week while I thought, (dithered), about the next step. Enjoy the modeling, always more relaxing than the thinking part.

Awesome work as always. I really enjoy your builds and your economy in finishing them. You finish in the time it takes me to finish a step...

I did some construction work on the Nieuport and continued the clean up and slight correction on the Pfalz. The Nieuport interior looks a bit rough but will shape up as more is added and rigging begins...I Hope 8)

Too much thinking makes my brain hurt Rick! Which is why I too prefer to do the modelling - but then like you I do like to try to get things right.
The cockpit construction looks good - as does the engine.
-
Nice work on the Pfalz fuselage halves with the corrections Rick , I removed the cowls on my to solve the issue . You N-17 pit is shape up wonderfully as well . :)
Terri
-
I was considering the Roden Pfalz in the future. I'll be interested to see how your work progresses.
-
Glad to see you dealt with the ejection pin marks. Many don't bother and they end up visible in an otherwise very nice build.
-
Thanks for the comments Guys and Gal! I am STILL waiting on some PE turnbuckles for the SPADS so I will continue with these two for a while longer.
RAGIII
-
Rick, you showed often WNW models in your scale in your build threads.
Compared to that the actual kit part looks very, hmm "robust"? Like upscaled 1/48 models ...
So it needs a real modeler to make a nice looking model but I'm sure, you will manage it!
Cheers,
Frank

I assume you are speaking about the Roden Pfalz ;D Yes it is a bit rough. I intend to do some work on sprucing it up but will not go Full Brad Cancian or Terri by making a new interior framework
RAGIII
-
As I think a WW1 Ace said, Familiarity Breeds Contempt. I thought that having built two Copper State Nieuports this one would be a breeze. Well I managed to make a Great Kit difficult! I was applying pressure for a reason I do Not Remember and broke several interior parts loose and broke a cabane Strut! So all is back together with the worst being the seat being a bit out of alignment.

I have been there before . I had a few repairs on the Pfalz fuselage because of to much pressure :o ::)
Repairs look good though Rick , hope the seat doesn't pose to much issues down the road for you . Nice work on the pit by the way :)

Terri
Thanks Terri! The seat will not pose any issues per se, just not quite lined up if viewed closely. As I don't enter contests and no one will be looking that closely it won't be noticed in the end!
RAGIII
-
i think we've all been there and done that at some point, that's looking really nice and if you hadn't of mentioned it i'm sure we wouldn't have noticed :D
-
Shame Rick,
But just par for the course for me, anyway, great save.
Guy
-
You are making great progress. The way you’re moving these will be done before you get the PE parts for the Spads.
-
Too much pressure is a common complaint Rick - it even occurs with scratch builds - guess how I know? You have commented that nobody will notice the slight mis-alignment of the seat, so no need to worry too much. (Provided that you do not look too closely too often to remind yourself about the mis-alignment of course!!)
The seat belts look as though they are made from real leather with a suitably worn look too.
Stephen.
-
Thanks Guys, I have progressed. I have glued the fuselage and upper rear fuselage decking to the forward section. The upper cowl panel is not glued in place: This May be where I leave this one for a while as the Turnbuckles finally arrived for My SPAD builds. August 9th to the 28th in just a regular Mail envelope :(

PS: I used putty just to make sure my glue joints were good. I ran out of Liquid glue so using Testors right now 8)

Fine progress on both builds, Rick, despite the mishap with pressure on Nupe. Watching with great interest, especially that my next project will be CSM Ni17.

Your Pfalz is shaping up wonderfully Rick :)
How was the fit of the lower wing ?
Terri

Thanks Terri. The lower wing took some tweaking and will require a little putty and sanding. Nothing near your Triplane build though 8)

Coming together well, Rick.
Will you be adding the walk-way on the port wing? How about the seam tape along the spine of the fuselage?

These are looking fantastic!
Any chance you would part with the 2nd/alternate cowl from the N17 kit? The one with the joins on each side instead of the top?

With the DR1 builds moving along I decided to a little work on the Pfalz. I added the access ports using Toms Model Works PE.

These are looking great and they are beautiful reference shots fir two smaller ones that I am building at the moment. I ran into a similar conundrum with the starboard gun on the Pfalz. Is it worth test fitting the exhausts to ensure they will have an uninterrupted fit?
-
That looks super Rick. Glad to see that you are giving these some attention again. I suspect that you will be finishing four models almost simultaneously .
Stephen.

I have been following your 1/144th builds and they are awesome! As for the exhaust fit, probably needs some tweaking but test fits show promise. I have a photo in the windsock Data File that shows a Captured DIII from the right rear. It looks as though there is an upward angle to the exhaust Not really pronounced but it is there.

Today I made some fairleads for the controls from styrene rod cut at an angle. I will most likely need to sand them a bit more once primed and I can tell how they look. In addition I added PE from Toms to the Pfalz wing, as well as the control horns.

That Roden Pfalz is really tempting me -I have the WnW D.IIIa but somehow the original D.III always looked even more elegant to me... Despite it being probably a bit more work than the WnW version. ;)
Great addions and improvements, too :)

I really miss Floquil Old Silver for that very reason , perfect for natural metal finishes . Both are looking good Rick , looking forward on seeing your choice for silver/grey on the Pfalz . :)

The radiator on the Pfalz looks excellent Rick - a big improvement on plastic parts.
That silver finish is also very realistic - as others have commented just the right amount of sheen. Two more excellent models on the way here....

Thanks to all for the positive and encouraging comments! So today is only a Very Small update. I masked the outline for the rudder cross on the Pfalz then sprayed the Jasta 10 Chrome Yellow on the tail and Nose. Next will be the overall Silbergrau finish.

The final finish will be just a TAD less silver but should look good...I Hope! I decided I had used a cross with proportions that were too large. Since I was going to have to re do I just went ahead and sprayed the entire tail yellow. Then I ordered a set of Montex Masks that have all I will need for all of the crosses. I hope they don't take too long getting here from Hannants ::) To meet the minimum I also ordered the Bren Gun PE for the SSW DIII 8)

I have done a small amount of work on the Nieuport. I finished applying the roundels, worked a little more on the engine, and cut away the cowling per the original aircraft. I did screw up on the cowling. I butchered the correct cowling and found I did not have another in My spares. So I used one with the joints on the sides modified it to the ones on the top, and cut away the bottom. Not perfect but it will work ::)

Just a Note on the masks and for that matter Pheons Pfalz DIIIa set. They went by info from GvW and Osprey on the Jasta 10 markings for Heldman,s 4117/17. In fact the aircraft depicted was a DIII as confirmed by Heldmans reports and GvW and the Windsock Data file breakdown of these aircraft by serial #. So use with a Roden DIII and eliminate the "A" from the serial Number ;D

Very sorry to hear that Rick. I'd bet that if you just shelve it for a while it will look repairable when you next check it out ....... In the mean time you've got the Nieuport to keep you in good spirits!
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks for all of the Condolences Guys and Gal! I really appreciate the thoughts ;D The Pfalz Won the Battle but in the end I will win the War. No , not on this one but on a replacement kit I hope to purchase in the near future. I love the scheme and want it in My collection! As for the Nieuport I made small progress today and hope to do more tomorrow!

Ugh. I feel your pain, Rick. One of the worst things I've ever done was to try and catch my WNW DH.2 as it fell from the table.
-
I have been catching up Rick and was admiring the Pfalz...... oh no what a disaster! That is so frustrating and disappointing at the same time. I was pleased to read that you do not intend to gibve up. Are there any parts that you could salvage for the spares box?
The Nieuport is looking good though and I am sure that no-one will notice the cowling. I also hope that this one does not get dropped.
Stephen.

Thanks again Stephen. I saved a few parts like the engine and seat etc. In this case the structural rigging worked against Me. It tried and succeeded in generally holding the wings together but at the cost of breaking struts. The final straw was trying to get the gear legs back in place and splitting one of the struts at the axle connection. Like I said I will tackle this kit and scheme again. Hopefully around Feb. I can get one as My self given Birthday present...and who knows there May be a Roden SPAD by then 8)

Thanks To ALL for your Support over the years on My builds. I am Not going to be posting in the Near future. I don't have the Heart to go on!

So I have continued on with the Nieuport 23. I have weathered heavily per the original Russian bird. I also added the upper wing. Rigging is in place and needs to be tightened.

Your N.23 is looking great! That silver dope finish is marvelous, especially with all of that heavy staining and oil residue.

Thanks. I like the Silver, Floquil Old Silver with a slight overspray of Extra Color Weiss Aluminum.

I worked on the Nieuport a bit more today. I added the Vickers, painted some leather details, and added the rudder and landing gear.

I tightened up the Main rigging lines today. It only took about 20 minutes and unusually for Me I had no issues ::) Next up is adding the control lines and gear rigging, then painting the wires and adding smoke and mirror buckles!

Great build and rigging. You say you're gonna paint the riggingwires. Does the paint stick well to the monoline? Can't you use a sharpie?

Thanks for the comments. I have used Sharpies in the past before attaching. I looked at some of the builds Des posted and realized I liked his "Steel" painted wires. So I have been painting them using Valejo steel thinned considerably. Works just fine!

Thanks for the comment. I wish I could build two TINY Pfalz aircraft from scratch ;D I only have a few parts left to attach and still a tad of weathering to do on the upper wings of the Nieuport. The rigging is finished and I added the control rods to the upper wing.

Wonderful to see this one lining up on final, Rick. Besides all of the great work you've put into this one as illustrated thus far, the very subtle contrast between the cowling and silver dope really highlights your mastery of the craft.

Without any politeness regarding the break of the Pfalz I honestly can say that this is a fantastic model in a great paint sheme, Rick.

A great job of a favourite scheme! Your multiple builds are impressive... I struggle to finish anything! Cheers Matt

Thank You for the kind comment! I used a Satin varnish on the Fabric .
and gloss on the cowling. I think it gives the right impression.

Thanks Stephen. Today I added the last of the parts. Just a bit of weathering on the upper wings and it is done. These should be the last photos before it is posted in the completed section 8)

Thanks Bob. The wings were Weathered/shaded using the "Oil Dot' technique. I used gold ochre, burnt umber and black dots, blended them, then used a wide slightly wet brush to remove most of the color.
