Thanks and don't quit looking. I would love to see you tackle the Roden SE5a in 1/48th ;D

After esting a day or two following MY Vacation I have gotten back to work on the two SE5as'. I have drilled all of the rigging holes in the Viper version and made sure that all were still opened on the McCudden bird. I also installed the engine and cowling on Grinnell-Milnes viper.

I added some wrinkles using sprue goo:

That's great progress, Rick -

Like the added wrinkles to the fuselage.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you on this SE5a build.

Thanks Dave! Here is a little heads up on the tail rigging. The "Standard" rigging is seen on the WNW instruction sheet below:

In 56 squadron it was discovered that in prolonged dives there was a tendency for the fin / tail to twist. The remedy was a 3rd bracing wire. Encore/ Roden got this correct so if anyone is doing a 56 squadron SE5a add this wire:

Fine progress.
And that is an interesting rigging detail, I was not aware of. Thanks for sharing this, Rick.

Great progress, Rick. Likewise, the additional rigging cable is a detail that has escaped me for over half a decade! Muchas gracias.
Sandy
P.S. it seems RAGIII Sqdn planes also have a tendency to dive OOC - maybe a few extra rigging lines would be a useful precaution on all future builds?

Great progress on both aircraft Rick!

Again, if you keep up this speed of building, you will soon need a new display cabinet  ;)

Thanks Przemo! As for the tail rigging it is explained in "High In The Empty Blue" using period sketches. Since we are talking about WW1 aircraft I probably should have said if doing a 56 squadron SE5a it "Most Likely" had the  3rd wire  ;D

Thanks Sandy. As for the tail rigging note My comment to Przemo above. Lets hope that extra wire works as you suggest for My "Nosedives"  ::)

Thanks Willem. You are correct about a "New Display Case". I can fit one of the two SE5a models in My 2nd case, the other will need a new home  ;D

Rick,
Add me to the list of those who had missed the extra wire on the tail until you pointed it out. By coincidence I was just starting the rigging on my Rhys Davids 56 Sqn. WNW SE.5a when you posted this, absolutely perfect timing! Thanks for sharing this info with us.
Cheers,
Lance

I am Happy the info was helpful Lance. Roden actually provides a small indicator for all three lines on the fin of their SE kit.

PS: I think I forgot to do the wire on My Rhys Davids build using the WNW kit  :-\

I did some more work today. I positioned the ailerons in a more realistic position, filled the circular opening on the fuselage underside and replaced with plastic card to represent the cover as seen on the original. I also cut out the spent shell opening. Finally I primed all of the fuselage and wing surfaces. The results showed I still have a bit more filling and sanding to do in a few places.
