WAK Ansaldo A.1 Balilla (1/33rd)
« on: May 22, 2018, 02:37:41 PM »
Hello All...

Now that the Dolphin is done, I think I shall start on a new paper model.  I have one from a manufacturer (WAK) and an authorized "recolor" from Matt77...the same artist who did the rendering on the Berg Scout from a while ago.

Should be a fun addition!  I should start tomorrow.  Watch this space...

Dan ;)

Thanks, Guys...I just couldn't wait to make another paper model.  Between some other stuff!

I got a tiny bit started on her last night.  Just glued the parts that need to be thicker to some 1/32nd balsa and started the rudders.  Adding thickness is s common practice.  Since most of the directions are in Polish, they tend to mark parts needing thickening with asterisks etc. so it makes things easy.  Traditionally, folks use thin cardboard from a cereal box to make these.  I find balsa is easier for me to make look good and adds some stiffness.

I'm planning on building them both side by side.  We'll see how much I get done at this point since the Outlaws are in town starting today!
Cheers and keep cutting,
Dan

All,

A smidge more.  I add balsa inserts into the main tail pieces for strength and form (these are designed in the kit...not my brilliant idea!).  I also ease the edges with a bit of sanding.  The paper is then folded over (the inserts are not glued...they "float") and edge glued.  Here is the result!

Coming along even with graduations and the outlaws visiting!  :o

Cheers,
Dan

Thanks for the encouragement Rick, Giuseppe and Gregory!  ;D

I started the lower wings on the Polish version.  The skeleton is balsa and has some nice undercamber.  I also embossed (from the inside with a straight edge and rounded wire) the upper surface of the paper for a 3-D effect.  It was touch and go since it's hard to bend the paper over the top and keep a nice bump-free surface, but it turned out ok.  I made sure the lower surface maintained the undercamber with some pre-forming of the paper and spots of super glue and accelerator.  Worked out ok!

I hope to finish the other side tomorrow and start on the Italian Job by Thursday.  We'll see how things go!

Cheers and thanks for looking,
Dan

Thanks, Nigel and Rick!  A bit of work on the top wing tonight...

This one has a folded card stock "box spar" that I inserted a piece of 1/16th balsa into for strength.  Then, the wing skins are attached very carefully and slowly with some pre-forming to avoid kinks etc.  I haven't finished the the wing tips yet, but at least the basics are together.  Looks ok from here!

More tomorrow when I hope to finish the tips and add some other parts like ailerons, what I think is a gravity tank and some other bits and pieces.  Then...do it all again for the Italian Job!

Cheers,
Dan

Thank you very much, Rick...this one is fun and doing them at the same time is enjoyable too.

I got the top wing done.  The biggest issue is the wing tips and the darts I cut out.  I'll leave them uncut on the next wing since I think they really weren't needed to get a nice edge.  I added the aileron bell cranks in the center section (tear drop shaped parts), a metal panel on the center section, then ailerons and aileron hinges.  Some touch up will be necessary but looking good so far.

More tonight when I'll begin the Italian wings armed with more knowledge!
Cheers,
Dan

Excellent update! I know I say this a lot but I am amazed not only with the results of your paper model builds but also at the speed in which you do them!
