A Roden Albatross D.III (completed 22/3/18)
« on: March 11, 2018, 04:31:07 PM »
Hi Everyone,
I started this a while ago and have slowly been getting closer to the rigging stage.

Then engine was Aftermarket.

Later I decided I needed the Eduard PE

My First serious attempt at wood, I tried to replicate unstained plywood.

After many coats of Tamiya Clears, I reached a deep honey tone.

Then decided which scheme I would use.  The Pilot is Karl Bolle.

Finally got the lower wing on and some painting and decals done.

I've done some mild weathering, and am letting it dry for a few days after oil streaking.

Thanks for looking,

Gaz

Very nice so far, you made a very convincing plywood and an interesting livery.

Really well done to date. I love the paint work! Nice to see another Roden Albatros being built!

Gentlemen,
Thank you very much!  Although this kit has potential, I think I will have to build another before I get things right.

Hah! Another one!

I don't think I have got a single model 'right' yet...

Good to see this build here Gaz, I'd forgotten about that wrapping on the engine. The engine has a lovely used feel to it

You already know I think your plywood is great, lovely and subtle. The stuff they used must have had some quality to it otherwise they couldn't have made it as thin as they did. It's not unusual to see paint finishes that look like they are made from shuttering plywood

Fantastic work Gaz, I look forward to watching this build develop. I also like your jig, where did you obtain that from ?, I have a wooden one very similar in construction however a plastic one would be much better for me.

Great build Gaz, she certainly looks the part.  Outstanding looking engine and wood tones (heck, everything).  Looking forward to your progress.

Thank you Richard.  What I meant by 'another one' was about the things I didn't know about the kit before hand.  This kit has a few idiosyncracies that I wasn't really expecting, like the interior framing being substantially narrower than the shell.  Or thinning the intake pipes before I put tape on them.

I think that aircraft manufacturers back then were better than we want to give them credit for.   I think they had aircraft grade plywood long before it ever became a part of aviation vernacular.

Gilly,
Thank you!  I got mine from BNA model world.  But the jig itself is made by a company called 'Vertigo Miniatures'.  They have a few different jigs for various scales.

Przemol and Borsos,
   Thank you very much!
There are quite a few times I have wished that WnW would come out with the early Albatros.  AS it is, I may have to get the D.I and D.II from Roden.  A saw a piece of video from the Albatros works, and it's amazing how the wood panels looked fresh from the factory.
