1/32 Nieuport decal options
« on: December 10, 2017, 02:02:19 AM »
Hello all,

I've inherited two Hobbycraft Nieuport 17s with Tom's Modelworks PE sets and Vacform conversions to build a Nieuport 24 or 27.

I'd like to build one as a 17 and another as a 24, in camouflage.

There are no decals with the kit, and a search of the online shops i frequent, hasn't turned up anything.

Can anyone direct me to a potential source?

Thanks for the info. It's a bit more than I want to spend on decals, but it is good to know the option exists.

An option would be to create your own.  There are sources for clear/white decal film (such as www.decalpaper.com) that you can run through your inkjet printer.  If you can find the images you want to use as decals and adjust them to 1/32nd scale you can just hit "print" on your computer and you'll have decals.

Thanks Kirk.

That's certainly an option too.

I'm rather shocked though, that nobody produces 1/32 Nieuport decals.

They weren't exactly rare aircraft, and kits are readily available.

I'm puzzled by the reluctance of the industry to produce French aircraft. Would love to see WNW's take on SPADs and Nieuports.

I'm guessing it's just supply and demand.  1/32nd isn't the most popular scale, and combined with the fact WNW only produces one French aircraft (the Salmson) means decal manufacturers can't see a potential return on investment.

1/32nd isn't the most popular scale.

I'm actually surprise to read that. Looking at this forum, it feels like its the primary scale for WW I modeling.

This particular forum centers on 1/32, but overall I'd guess more 1/48th and 1/72nd scale kits/decals are produced and built.

I find these perceptions to be interesting. As an old timer here I have enjoyed the many and diverse scale builds on the Forum. Looking at the "Under Construction" first page I see roughly 20 1/32nd builds in progress, and 20 "Other Scales" builds. So I guess one could say there is a higher percentage of 1/32nd vs 1/72nd or 1/48th etc. but overall they are equal. My thought is that those of us that build in 1/32nd just post more  ;D I agree that in the past the "Other scales" were more popular, and perhaps still are, marginally. I am thinking that WNW have tilted the scale a bit so to speak. 8) Finally yes I believe there are/ were, far more decals available in 1/48th and 1/72 as until about 9 or 10 years ago 1/32nd kits were limited to vacs and a very small number of injection kits. Just some random thoughts.

Looking at so many fantastically painted French planes of the Great War (contrary to the usual PC-10 over all -- sorry folks, no insult intented!) I personnaly support every demand for French aftermarked decals in any scale....

From the "about us" section of this website: "This site is dedicated to the construction of WW1 aircraft models in 1:32 scale".  That being the case I'd tend to think we'd find more 1/32nd scale modelers here than elsewhere.  Also, before Wingnut Wings put 1/32nd scale on the map the VAST majority of kits were (and still are) produced by Eduard, Roden, etc. in 1/48th and 1/72nd scales.  I go to model shows on occasion and I'd dare say 95% of the WWI kits I see for sale are 1/48th or 1/72nd scale.

Sadly, there WERE very nice aftermarket sheets for the Nieuport 17/bis/24/27 for French, Italian & RFC units by Americal/Gryphon and Spada Decals.  :'(
