Pfalz D.IIIa, Eduard 1:48
« on: May 26, 2017, 02:57:33 AM »
After your great interest I like to present my first finished model of 2017, a Pfalz D.IIIa
This comes as a Eduard Dual Combo kit in 1/48. Additionally another PE set from Eduard, HGW/Eduard fabric seatbelts, LMG 08/15 from Master and Gaspatch turnbuckles were used. Brass helped for scratching details and wood are used for the airscrew.
The paints are Alclad, Gunze and oils.

The sources of the original are questionable, but it looks so great that I could not resist to this colors.

Hope you will like it too ;)

Who would not love a Pfalz D.III? And especially one so lovely colourful! It is a beauty in all aspects of modelling. Sincere congratulations!

Beautiful clean finish and great detailing. I particularly like the results you've got with the wood prop, do you use veneers as I do or cut your own layer stock? Like your Nieuport this is an exceptionally well done model.
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you!

Lance, for some kinds of wood I have veneers (e.g. pear with 0.55mm), for others not. Here the dark is pear, the bright one is boxwood. I have to cut it to veneer at first (done with a circular saw Proxxon KS230). Often I have to sand the veneer down to around 0.4 ... 0.45mm, depending on the amount of layers and thickness of airscrew.

Cheers,
Frank

You're not going to leave it without build details and it is a fantastic build
What did you use for paints what did you use for the Pfalz gray not an easy match

For red and green areas I started with Alclad white primer and then Gunze colors according to the Eduard manual.
The wings are primed with Alclad grey and then Alclad "semi matt alu", which seems to be a good match for the real alu powder color. Later I put small tapes ion the ribs and shadowed with Gunze smoke.

A gorgeous looking Pflaz Frank, you have done a superb job with this kit, the colours really are eye-catching and the prop is spectacular, well done.

Truly stunning, Frank.  One of the best looking and most finely detailed 1/48 Pfalz I've ever seen.

Thank you all for your nice feedback!

     That's not easy!
Lance, that's right! Otherwise everyone on this planet would make biplanes with wooden props ;D

Now I'm really wonder, what you will say about my (at least I think it is) masterpiece - this will follow this weekend 8)

Cheers,
Frank
