Recommended lodgings in Telford?
« on: July 15, 2016, 04:27:22 AM »
Yes, I know, I've threatened to attend Scale Model World for at least the past 3 years now, but this time Carol and I are actually going to make it.  We have finally sold our house in Montana, so at last we will have the funds to make the trip.  I reckon we'll need to book lodging now.  Any recommendations?  TIA.
Cheers,
Bud

Hey Bud, I've stayed at the Holiday Inn before which is right next door to the exhibition centre but it tends to get booked up well in advance.

To be honest the immediate area is pretty devoid of any charm and you'd only go there to visit the Centre. If Carol is coming to the show with you it won't be a problem but if she is going to do her own thing, you might be better picking somewhere nicer a little further afield and traveling in. That's what I've more often done in the past.

Of course the onsite hotels are full of exhibitors and you'd enjoy the crac in the bars in the evening.

If you're coming over mainly for the show, then try the Holiday Inn, if you're coming for a trip to the UK and want to fit Telford in, then its not too far from Stratford-on-Avon or even Oxford. (Assuming you'll be able to drive a stick-shift on the correct side of the road!!)

Not sure if I can make it down this year but hopefully might get a chance to meet up.
Sandy

PS post Brexit, your dollar will buy a hell of a lot this year - bring a spare suitcase!!

Thanks for your input, Sandy and Edgar!  Just checked the Holiday Inn's availability for Nov 11-13 and there are no rooms available for that date.  Hmm.  I'll have to look around outside of town.
Cheers,
Bud

Hi Bud.

Given its central location, I'm not surprised that the Holiday Inn is booked up, but I have  to say that I find such hotels a bit soulless. Telford is very close to delightful villages, such as Ironbridge and Coalbrookdale on the River Severn. The area is beautifully green and wooded, yet regarded as the cradle of the Industrial Revolution, due in no small part to the work of the Darby family. In fact, the world's first iron bridge crosses the Severn at Ironbridge. In its idyllic setting the bridge, which was constructed almost as a piece of carpentry, is most evocative.

As a tourist area there are small bed and breakfast establishments and great pubs to eat in. Ena and I stayed in a b&b last year for the Telford show and thoroughly enjoyed it. The drive into Telford was short and hassle free. We're doing the same this year.

It's only a thought, but it might be worth considering.

We can only get to Telford for one day this year, but it would be great to meet up.

Best wishes
Nigel

Thanks for all your feedback, fellas!  Lots of good information all around.  We got lucky and found accommodations in Telford, @ 10 mins from the International Center.  Nigel and Edgar, I really look forward to meeting you there and I hope you can make it down, Sandy.
Cheers,
Bud

Bud,

good to hear you're all sorted for the show, should be a good one.

You are probably already aware but the RAF Museum at RAF Cosford is just down the road as well and is well worth a visit.
They've even added some WW1 exhibits.

Nick

I'm going for the first time this year. I'll be around the Romsey Modellers stand. Staying at the Park Inn.

So, here's the deal, Des. The first of we two to win a Lottery will pick up the tab for the other fellow, and our little dreams come true! I'm off to buy this week's draw tickets later today, confidence is high! :P 8)
