Fokker DVII OAW early rib tapes and crosses
« on: February 02, 2016, 09:34:49 PM »
I'm getting to the stage where I'm going to apply decals to my 1/72 Jasta 18 duo.
What colour of ribtapes could be common on a OAW Fokker D.VII with early low exhaust? And what cross on the bottom wing is likely? I have the standard crosses from the Roden kit (but it is OAW mid, I backdated it). Could those be applicable...?

Thanks for any pointers! :)

Thanks, Richard -since I have a supply of blue tapes and my previous D.VII had pink/mauve tapes, I'll go with light blue. The only picture I have is a 3/4 rear view of poor quality that is taken directly at eye-level since the aircraft is lying on it's belly after a hard (forced?) landing. Being Jasta 18 it's likely (according to the Pheon instructions) that the upper surfaces were red, so no help there either. So, I'll go with blue :)

Any ideas on the underwing-crosses?
The aircraft in question is this one:

Thick "square" type, or the later ones with narrow white borders, shortened arms or not... if nothing else, I could use what I got in the Roden OAW mid kit...  The tail cross appears to have shortened arms, a clue perhaps...?
I checked the wnw decals for OAW early types, and they have Karl Thom's early OAW with thick crosses, so I guess I could go with those also -since my other D.VII is an Albatros late version, so there's a bit of a difference between them.

The joys of WWI modelling, I guess! :)

I looked through the Fokker Anthology volume 2 which focuses on OAW DVIIs. As for the wing crosses: The Earliest OAW builds had Full cord crosses on the lower wings with white borders on all sides and ends. The ends were often painted out to conform with the latest direction. The upper wing crosses on some/most very early OAW aircraft had the cross location centered on the strut location and did not overlap the aileron. Again the ends were soon overpainted to eliminate the white, leaving just the arms bordered. I would highly recommend picking up the Anthology if you don't have it, well worth the Dollars! IHTH,

Thank you very much for having a look for me -really appriciated! :D

The Osprey Jasta 18 book (another one ony my wishlist!) shows Monningtons D.VII on the cover with thick bordered crosses on the upper wing.
Obviously being Jasta 18 with all their overpainting it would be entirely possible they were repainted too, but since Monnington's machine is also shown as an early OAW machine, I'll assume the Jasta 18 painters painted around the crosses and only painted over the white outer edges.
So I'm going to use a similar style on the bottom. Of course, by the time the model will be done, a picture showing just what you need shows up somewhere! :)

Thanks again,

Jeroen
