Thanks, everyone!  I did a bit more work last night.  It took the most time to get the flash off of the delicate parts, but here it is on its legs!

I could've substituted some thin brass for the landing gear, but I'm trying to use the kit parts when possible.  Looks pretty ok.  If I REALLY hate it in a week, I'll cut them off and add the brass...

Also started putting the little resin engine together.  More tonight!

Dan

All,

I tried my hand at the gun, beginning the mount and the engine all with bits of PE.  I only managed to mess up the front legs on the gun mount...which is easy to fix.   The mount isn't glued in but just sitting there for show.  I used some lead foil for the ammo bag. I also note that the little PE rods on the engine are not quite long enough to reach the rocker arms.  This is likely me not putting the cylinders in correctly.   :-[  I think I'll make those out of stretched sprue.  This is also my first attempts at resin.

All in all, looks pretty neat and I'm having lots of fun with this little kit.

Thanks for looking!

Dan

Thanks for the looks and comments, everyone.  They really help.  And a special thanks to Antonio who sent me some great shots of this beast.  It turns out that the plane I'm modeling had covers on the wheels, a different gun set up and no fairings on the landing gear legs!   :-[  Trouble is, I like the spoke wheels etc. and the gun with the side tray of ammo just screams "cool".  So I'm saying it was having some maintenance and experimenting with armaments!  ;)

Here is is with my custom mix.  I like the color though I'm not sure how accurate it is.  I have a feeling that the Italian planes were not stark white.  I've seen Nieuports and SPADS that are cream/yellow/linen in color and they look great with the green and red markings...so this is my interpretation!

You can also see I made the spoke wheels, started painting the engine and the bottom of the wing surfaces.  I made brown colored pencil lines along ribs so you can see them a bit.  Can't wait to put the markings on.  Then some weathering and then start careful assembly!

Wish me luck...Dan

Hi Dan,
here is a short recap of wht I found reading some documentation: by the end of may 1915 the Italian army air service got 12 Voisins III from France (6 with a Salmson 140hp and 6 without engine).

In the meantime SIT (an Italian aircraft production industry) acquired the licence from the French company.
Aquila Italiana, a mechanic industry acquired the licence from Salmson to produce their 140hp engine.

In June 1915, 2 Voisin Squadrons were created:

16 Squadriglia (4 planes s/n 377 379 380 381)

17 Squadriglia (5 planes s/n 585 586 587 588 590)

In early August the two squadriglie were renamed respectively 5 and 7.

On 15 April 1916 they were renamed again respectively as 25 and 26.

Most of the early photographs of 7 squadriglia (including the photo quoted by Dan) show an overall very light shade that can be according to my interpretation off white or a slightly yellowish shade of white if the first lot of planes came from France, so to me your interpretation of the yellowish shade appears a bit too "yellow".
The 589 according to the records quoted by Paolo Varriale in WD 135 was a French built machine.
Moreover there is the photo showing clearly the VII Squadriglia marking.

There are photos showing planes from those Squadriglie with and without fairings around the shock absorber springs on the 4 wheels so I imagine they were moveable and could be on or off for different reasons.

The Italian built Voisins (as the WD says) were mainly of the V type (only 7 belong to the III series), they were probably in natural dark metal finish. The photo of the 589 shows a radial engine (could be the original Salmson) but the SIT production is portrayed on the WD 135 carying a 6 cylinders inline engine (Isotta Fraschini) and a nourrice in the middle of the upper wing... There is just one picture that shows V1299 with that outfit.

Another interesting feature the some Italian built Voisins show in the pictures (not for the 589 picture I shared with Dan) is a second machine gun mounted on top of the upper wing where the two radiators converge. It is always a 9 mm twin barrel Fiat Revelli MG.

The WD 135 is fantastic and if you're interested in Voisins it's a "must have"!

Ciao

Antonio
