Even though 1/72 is not my preferred scale I will be buying the new Be2c and Eindecker, to show support for Airfix's decision to return to WW1 subjects. Let's not forget Airfix produced a line of 1/72 WW1 kits from the mid 1950s to the early 70s, and some like the Handley Page 0/400 and Sopwith Pup are still gems even now.

I understand Airfix's hesitancy in committing big money back into a niche market because let's face it, WW1 is not a big money spinner for mainstream companies which can make a lot more from a Spitfire or 109 than from a WW1 subject. What we as modellers can do is encourage them by buying the new kits and also urge them to upscale some into 1/48th scale too as they are doing with the Boulton Paul Defiant.

A line of 1/24 WW1 aircraft would be impressive too but given the development costs I think Airfix would go 1/48th scale, or they may expand the 1/72 range which would please an enormous number of WW1 modellers who have been shoved aside by the mania for WnW and other large scale models . But we shouldn't get ahead of them. Airfix are dipping their toes back in the WW1 water. Let's applaud that and support it.

Its strange that the Eindekker has that shape especially considering Airfix's current method of using LiDAR on full size specimens to generate a 3d computer model for use in ther tool cutting. It wont stop me from buying it though!

Also the simplification of the gun feed into the funny shaped cowl piece. Still as I said when these kits were announced originally I will buy them just cuz.

Found a video on the Facing Book of the new Airfix Fokker E.II being assembled. I checked the regular website for the poster (Modellschmiede Hämelerwald), but it doesn't appear to have been posted there yet.

In any event, for those on the Book of Face, here's the kit being assembled in stop motion. I thought some of you might like this:

Thanks Warren for the link to the build, quite a clever way the short video was done.

Well, I know some of us were curious as to the funny front end shape by the cowling. It also shows the fit, etc. He has some other good WWI builds like this on his website, such as a Roden Gotha.

The video  first appeared AFAIK behind one of the Airfix Advent Calander windows, posted next day on their Facebook page. I presume he made it specially for them.

That was interesting to watch. It would appear that the kit comes with some kind of jig to set the struts. I'll definitely be buying a couple of these.

Yep, guess they listened when all of us said it was a good idea with their Sopwith Pup. I'm befuddled as to why manufacturers won't include one in their kits. It would make building less intimidating to new folks.

Does anyone know when these will actually hit the shops? I've been to my local model shop to order a B.E and the owner knows nothing about it or the Eindecker, nor do his wholesale suppliers.

According to the email I got from Airfix yesterday...yesterday! Or at least, they were "just in" yesterday. Their respective product pages on Airfix.com also now feature the stop-motion videos.

Airfix has a warehouse stocktake - nothing goes out - at the same time as these come out? Someone didn't plan very well!
