Your technique has produced an excellent effect, James, very realistic. I really like this finish you've produced on the wings, to use some of Bo's words, brilliant work! 8)
Cheers,
Lance

Perfect, James! It's nice that the more simple technique is the more effective.

Spectacular results, James!  And thanks for the tutorial on Aviattic CDL!  I love the sponged on mottle.  This is shaping up to be the best looking Roland I've ever seen.
Cheers,
Bud

Michael, many thanks for the kind comments. I'm very new to the Hobby (about 1 year now). I basically stand on the shoulders of giants, mainly the incredible talent found here and without you guys and your willingness to share your techniques and tips I wouldn't be getting the results I am now.

So lots of small bits done today;

Radiators and windows were masked and painted - I used the lovely Uschi van der Rosten Steel polishing compound for the radiator grills while the windows received a a coat of black followed by the light blues.

After this I thought I would do some work on the propeller - Using a combinations of acrylics and oils.

But the big thing today was that I decided to crash my Roland!

Although I think that this is probably one of the easiest crashes to replicate...... just a nose down landing :D

Awesome work with your radiator and windows, and the propeller is excellent, the break looks realistic.

Des, thank you for your constant encouragement!

I'm really pleased with the propeller break and since posting I have done a little more work on the painting of it. Basically added some deck tan and then the oils and orange transparency.

As for the effects of cutting the propeller to make it look realistic it was all about the thought process - if the propeller is rotating this way how would the wood split/shatter on impact and where?

So this afternoons activities were canceled due to rain so I was able to do a little more work :D

First up finish the prop - Using the exact same colours and techniques as I followed for the actual prop I filled in the areas appropriately - only I didn't give the broken ends any varnish.

I upped the exposure rate so you can see the splinters.

With that done I decided to crack on with the wheel struts - a bit of preshading - the base colour of light blue and then a quick wash saw these done pretty quickly.

Time for a bit of dry fitting and posing.
