At the moment, having not found any indication about the USN usage of the HHD2 neither on the sea nor on the land, the other most likely candidate to the 3rd open position is

Giorgio Michetti

(Francavilla al Mare, 29 May 1888 – Roma, 4 February 1966)

He served, as Silvio Scaroni, in the 76a Squadriglia and was a close friend of Scaroni himself.
He was credited 5 officially recognized victories in WW1 and used to fly an HD1, that was enough to be called an Ace...

He marked his planes with a white seahorse in a black circle.
Of course he had the same painting schemas of Scaroni (except for the personal marking, of course).

But I found this profile on the book (6):

In the same book there is this photo:

taken in spring of 1918 of the full Squadriglia Line up in their last base (Casoni, near Castelfranco Veneto - Treviso)
Where you can see the seahorse plane

but also the Scaroni plane

Painted dark and with the personal marking inverted tones...

So, not to make 2 identical planes I prefer to use this alternative livery.

Scaroni's HD1 7517 was the last plane he used and was adopted by him in late June/early July 1918.

Italy tested the HD 2 in Venice,
If my memory doesn't fail there is some photo around.

Thanks everybody,

Yes ermeio, there was (according with (3) ) a first test sample was sent to the Italian Navy in april 1918 but the Navy was already receiving the M5 which was considered superior and no order was issued for the Hanriot.

Andonio great choice of reading indeed... I really like Hanriots so I will follow your thread in order to inspire myself to build the one I have in my stash!
Best regards

Thanks filip!

here are some colour test I made (over gray primer):

( the colours look a bit darker to the naked eye )

For the Coppens livery I tried:

39) Citadel ultramarine blue 61-33
40) Citadel enchanted blue 61-34
41) Citadel regal blue 61-32

I prefer no. 40

For the undersurfaces (wings and fuselage) I will use aluminum dope... will check which one

For the Italians:
42) Misterkit IT-02 Italian Camouflage Light brown
43) Misterkit IT-05 Clear Doped Linen (Dark)

43 was an old open jar and was not any more usable, I thinned it to make the chip, it's OK for the base CDL (undersurfaces) but I threw the jar in the waste bin and ordered some fresh paint.

42 is the overall colour used at that time OVER the CDL for the upper surfaces and fuselage top and sides also on the metallic parts (forward fuselage and cowling) it's a good colour and I will use it.

Comments / suggestions on my choices are more than welcome!

------

To get some empiric indications about the different size of the HD2 elevators, I cut the tail from the picture linked by ermeio (thanks!) and joined it with an HD1 tail looking for a similar point of view. I had to flip horizontally the picture of the Belgian HD1 to have a suitable perspective:

I think it's enough to make some reasoning about proportions. The HD1/HD2 kit provides also the HD2 fin and rudder as a resin add-on, so I will use it to measure new horizontal plans...

Hallo everybody, I am currently in study phase, nothing on plastic yet...

In the meantime here is the thistle I redraw in vectorial format:

This is how it should appear once transferred on the plane

And this is the real vectorial drawing

Of course it's free for everybody to make any use but a commercial one!
(and if anybody's able to print white decals I'll be grateful for life!!!!)

I based my redraw on this photo:

Referenced on this site
http://www.belgian-wings.be/webpages/navigator/Photos/MilltaryPics/Personnel/WWI/Coppens%20Willy/willy_coppens.htm

I'm going to sit back on my bench and start playing with plastic now...

Ciao

Antonio

Seriously good work, Antonio!  I really like your thistle!

You can't go wrong with Hanriots...kind of like Spitfires...

Cheers,

Dan

Great approach to the research Antonio. The schemes you've chosen will make this a very attractive grouping. I'll follow your progress with interest, it would be a real bonus for me if Wingnut Wings eventually release one of these as someone has mentioned.
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks everybody!
yesterday I worked on the fuselages piercing holes for rigging, filing out some non - existing panel lines and tracing better the existing ones, moreover I filed out the access step on the Belgian port side because none of my photos showed it, while on Macchi built Hanriots they appear on every photo I have seen.

I also went on studying the Instrument panels which will be different for each of the 3 planes, and some cockpit details.

I'll take time for scanning the drawings to show them here.

I'm also trying to decide what to do with the seats, whether there are good aftermarket seats or to thin those supplied by the kit and make the holes by hand.

I love these moments of the build when everything seems floating in a sort of primordial chaos and as time goes by aggregates into the final shape...
