Nieuport 17 1/32 WNW, nah, Academy... :)
« on: February 18, 2015, 04:51:42 AM »
Hi guys (and girl!)!
It's been a while since I've posted anything on this forum. Sorry. But since this build had come out in a French magazine I didn't feel it was correct to also post the pics here. But since it's been a while now....here are the pics.
I am not showing them all just yet...patience...
I wanted to thank the forumist who provided the "Bob" decals from another Academy boxing.
Hope you like it!

The original propeller was reshaped and detailed a bit. Painted with oils.

I've also reshaped the struts.

The engine is a modified resin Oberusel. Or I tooke Roden Dr1 plastic one, can't remember...

A bit of detailing the tail and fuselage...

The Lewis gun is actually a resin cast from a roden Lewis which I had detailed with some photoetched.

That's all for now!

Ciao
Iwik

Very nice work Iwik and having an Ni-17 in the stash, I'll certainly follow you build with interest. Another learning experience for me!

Best wishes

Hi!

First, for Derrick!

The follow up!

Don't forget to enlarge the cockpit sides!

You have to open up the lower part of the cowling to represent a russian Ni17.

The painted mastercaster cockpit. Pretty nice but will cause big fit problems. Scratching the whole thing might be quicker and less nerve racking...

The whole thing assembled:

Closing up!
You can see that I've reshaped the holes for the aileron control "cables", and modified the emplacements where the main struts are supposed to be resting on the top fuselage. This means extending the legs of those struts.

Masking and preshading:

First paint job.

Decals and first weathering. Notice that the cowling and engine access doors are painted with rub'n buff, giving them a shinny metallic feel that the rest of the kit doesn't have.

The Vickers ( ;D) in place. Head rest and cockpit padding made in putty. Note the beginning of the rigging process.

Struts detailing, rigging, and aileron hinges in place.

Finished photos next time!

Ciao

Sorry for asking, but what is the trouble with MasterCaster's cockpit?

Hi!
LUKAS: oh you won't be spending much money on them. You can find them really cheap on ebay. Spend the rest on mastercaster' cowling.
Stefan: if you assemble the whole thing hoping it magically fits the sides of the fusealge and the back of the cockpit, like I did hope it would, well you're in for a big surprise. It will be too narrow by a good 2mm. So I first glued one side to the fuselage, but only the bottom of it. Then, after many tries, glued the other side and then glued some thin stripes of plastic to fill in the gap it made with the back part. For short, when viewed from the front, the fuselage sides do indeed touch the floor, but have to make a "V" shape in order to touch the rims of the fuselage sides on the top. See what I mean? :-\
