Very accomplished, Rick, but then what else might we expect from your skilled hands?

Best wishes

Rick, I was wondering what you were using for the interior
bracing?  Any sign of the wandering SE? ;) :D  Looking forward
to the next bit of magic coming out of NC. :D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

You have done brilliant work so far Rick, your wood colours are superb, the interior is looking excellent.

RAGIII I have two Roden SE 5 in my stash, one I won here  ;D

So I will be looking here to learn.
I wish you to get your WNW SE 5 very quickly.
Adam

Thanks Adam, I hope in the end my build inspires and gives you ideas on how to tackle this kit. Time will tell  ;D

Ernie,
As always thanks for looking in and your comments. As for the wires, they are the oldest and most simple method I know, Heat Stretched Sprue. My WNW order never made it past my regional PO. Went back to New Zealand. David has answered my E MAil and promises ton let me know when the SE and Salmson re ship.

Des.

Thanks Des. I am attempting to add some/most of the interior detail offered in the WNW kit. It would be much easier with the kit in hand rather than trying to guess at drawings from the WNW instructions  ::)

Due to an unexpected work schedule change and some self created difficulties with the kit, it has been a while since I posted an update. I have almost completed the interior work but have changed my mind as to which of McCuddens aircraft I am going to model. I had a couple of modeling sessions where nothing seemed to go right. This led to an attempt to graft the bulged portion of the resin upper cockpit with the plastic Roden original. All went well with one side then disaster struck on the second. So I began to look at alternatives. I have been studying 4891, using every photo I have and a magnifying glass, and am about 75% convinced that the aircraft did not have bulged sides. I like controversy so have decided to model 4891 with no bulges unless someone can convince me otherwise.
I also have it in mind to do a Diorama with the McCudden figure someday and as he is wearing his Hun Hat 4891 is more appropriate.

The photo below shows my progress. I am sure all will notice how untidy the edges of the cockpit look as well as the seem where the decking meets the fuselage sides. This area will be scraped and cleaned off to allow glue to set up properly. The upper fuselage/cockpit coaming covers all of the bad spots...  or so I think! I also need to paint the edging aluminum on the inside edge.

That really looks good, Rick.  Your instrument panel looks
great as does the wood work in general. I know whichever
version you go with, you will end up with an amazing model,
my friend.  Onward and upward. :D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Outstanding job on the cockpit, Amigo!  The instrument panel is brilliant.  I support your decision to go without the bulged cockpit.  I've yet to see a photo that clearly shows the bulge on 4891.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks Ernie. I have now scraped off the paint I mentioned and it looks a lot better for the removal! The panel is out of the box Roden with the Encore/Eduard PE instruments. They look very effective to my eye. As a matter of fact the panel is one of the things I think the Encore kit beats the WNW SE5a on  8)

Thanks Bud, as I said reference Ernies post the Instruments in the Encore kit really do enhance the panel. As for 4891 I am even more convinced now. I went back and looked at Dr. Merrils Booklet that came with the 56q. Decals. He shows the bulge on all aircraft "Known to have the bulge" 4891 does not have it illustrated. The photos I looked at really do not show any sign. There was one that I thought had an indication but under the magnifying glass turned out to be shadow or exhaust staining, not the outline of the bulge! That and the fact that Encore has also come to the No Bulge conclusion has me feeling pretty good about my choice.

Thanks ED, I am glad they look 1/32nd  8) I appreciate you looking in as always Amigo!
