How where real planes painted?
« on: January 13, 2015, 12:28:34 AM »
Hi,
I hope this is the right forum...

I just received my WnW Felixstowe and I was thinking of something different for the display:
I was thinking of displaing the plane during the painting process.
I want to do the red/white one.
I think that the camo paint was applied at the operational base over the factory finish.
my question is: how the planes where painted? With brush or airbrush? Are there some pictures of the period, also of other planes?

If someone has some info it would be of great help  :D

Thanks!

Andrew

I do not have the answer you are seeking although I have an opinion... we all know what those are like  ::) As for "FACTORY" schemes it depends. Most were probably doped/brushed by hand but some were sprayed with a paint sprayer( at least German aircraft). I do have a picture in Eiserne Kreuz und Balken Kreuz that shows this process being done. My guess is that Most Squadron and Personal Markings were done by the Squadron Mechanic/Painter. Now when talking about something as LARGE as a Felix, I would think it would take a Village   ;D Seriously many would be needed and I have no Idea if they would Mask and Paint or free hand things. I know this isn't a lot of help but it is the best I have to offer.

This question has been asked before not just on this forum but other forums as well and to date there has never been a definitive answer. I think it is like a lot of things that happened 100+ years ago, most of it is guess work unless there is actual photographic or documented proof, maybe someone will come up with an answer we can all take as being fact.

Andrew,

I don't know the answer either.  I do know that as soon as you are done with the project, you WILL find a picture of exactly what you needed to know.  ::) :)

Andrew,

Jamo's post dated 05 Nov 14 regarding 'PC no 10........ the last word by Ian Huntley' may be worth a read, especially the 'Fairy A.I.D Doping Notes and Diagrams' on page 28.

Good luck with your project.

It's not an aswer for all planes and each period, but look at those pics: experimental camouflage in 1914 on "parasol":

quite simple isn'it?

I read somewhere that the guy pictured painting the plane actually was a well-known french artist...reminds me of the salomon-camouflaged British MKI tanks.
One should keep in mind that at that time people were professional skilled craftsmen not only ``painters´´,,they were trained in drawing letters ´free handed´for example,I've seen photos of men painting cockades by brush,I think that was usual that time.
Painting a Felixstowe would'nt have taken a lifetime or a village I suggest this could have been done in about one or two days maximum.

Hello,

the way of painting was according to my acknowledgement different:
Factories used brushes, some also airbrush.

In the field the painting was done always with a big brush.
Camourflag patches with a toilet brush.

Many greetings

Bruno

Thanks for the information from me too. I have been wondering lately if decals of personal markings were too perfect. It's good to know many personnel were professional sign artists.

Indeed, sometimes they are too perfect. But OTOH scaling markings down does have a way of diminishing flaws!

There are many original pieces of original fabric with personal and unit markings floating around. The museum in Paris has some particularly nice examples. Many of them are a good deal cruder than the photos would lead you to believe...
