WNW Albatros DV Jasta V Lt Wolf- newbie to WW1
« on: December 16, 2014, 02:01:29 PM »
Hi all, I am new to these forums and I am starting my second foray into WW1 modeling after completing a WNW SE5a a couple of years ago. I love the WNW kits and they have attracted me to WW1 aviation modeling. The detail is so good and the build quality is on par with Tamiya in my opinion, also I think the scale is perfect.

Anyway I have an ambitious plan on building 3-4 Jasta 5 Albatros and am starting with Lt Wolf's plane and will be using the FCM decal sheet. This will be out of the box except for some Master gun barrels

Anyway I made a start today and this is what I have accomplished to date, at this stage I am just doing little bits and pieces whilst I work out the best way to build this kit

I have seen a couple of builds where the nail heads? have been simulated using a riveter and as I have never done any riveting before and like to try something new on each of my models I thought I would give it a go. Apologies for the pic as I had to use my phone.

I also opened up the exhaust- not perfect but better than stock I think

I read that the section behind the pilots seat is meant to be fabric even though the kit tells you to paint it as wood, so I decided to use some Tamiya tape to try and dodgy this look. I have already sprayed some grey primer on and will attempt to airbrush the lozenge pattern. If anyone can help me with what paint colours to use that would be appreciated. Again apologies for the pic quality.

I have seen others produce a really nice seat and cushion so had a go at making one myself using putty. I am not 100% happy with it so would like to hear any thoughts on whether to keep this or not?

Finally I added some detail to the tank by dremelling some indents into the front.

Any comments or tips are most welcome as I could use all the help I can get

Thank you

Anthony

You are off to a great start! The riveting/nail heads look like they will be effective once painted and the darker wash or whatever you use shows them off!

Thanks RAGIII. I am hoping the rivets will show through the decals on the fuselage when done.

With a wash (or pastel powder) they will show up. Good to see your work here. WWI modeling has a special appeal as you are finding out.

You seat cushion looks pretty good, and I would suggest smaller "buttons". Leather color and some washes will work wonders. Nicely done!

As far as I can see, your seat cushion looks ok. You might want to add some buttons, though.

Use a part of sprue, stretched to the appropriate diameter, cut tiny slices as buttons. Insert. Repeat.

You have made a great start so far Anthony, the seat cushion looks fine but will be enhanced with buttons and some leather paint.

Good work, Anthony.  The opening of the exhaust looks well
done and your seat cushion, with a couple of extras already
mentioned will be first rate. Well done, and thanks for sharing. :D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Suggest maybe hunting down loz decal for the baffle rather than attempting to paint it, or paint it CDL as the scant photo record doesn't seem to confirm loz used here, but does confirm Plain linen

(For a rehash of this discussion see my build log here)

thanks everyone for your help.

Bo, wow you are nuts  (in a nice way). That is spectacular. I have been proceeding with the build and will post pics later today

A few more bits and pieces have been worked on.

I started on the interior woodwork. I'm not 100% happy with it at this stage but may try and do a bit more to it.

I also painted the fuel tank and quite like the final result.

I originally attempted to paint the canvas behind the pilot seat in a lozenge colour but after Bo directed me to his thread I went with a pale linen colour instead.

I used Alcald Dark Aluminium followed by a wash for these drums to get a slightly darker look.

And finally I added some buttons to the seat and painted it a red leather colour followed by a wash and some dry brushing

Any comments welcome

Cheers

Anthony
