Hello Patrick:

You are doing much than I did with this kit.  I am about ready to toss it in the bin, just a mess.  You are doing a great job with the cockpit and how you managed to bend the seat without breaking remains a mystery.  There is a head reast in the space behind the seat, I don't remember if it is in the kit or if you have "scratch" build one.  Otherwise it looks great.
I will be following along on this one.

Best

Mark

Hello Mark,

Thank you for your support my friend. Nice to hear from you again. The more comments I get, the more I begin to wonder why the seat didn't break!  ::)
There is a head rest in the kit Mark, but it is still in the kit. I have to install it yet.

Kind regards
Patrick.

Everything looks really good Patrick. Now I know the fellow to pester with questions when it comes time to build Bishop's Nieuport!  ;D

Cheers,

Chris
You can have it good; You can have it fast; you can have it cheap. Pick any two, but all three are impossible.

Thank you very much Chris, I think I will be Nieuport-free now until 2016. So everyone is warned about that.  :D In 2015 there will be WnW kits waiting! Yes!! But first I will try to finish this rather difficult build. Not like your magnificent Salmson, but in his own simplicity as an a/c with a lot of pitfalls for the poor modeler. :-[

Kind regards
Patrick

Better speak up to add my name to the many crossing our fingers for you...
I've tackled these late Roden Nieuports twice so far. They're lovely when done, or if finished, I should say. I managed one, but fell foul of the other.

The seat is only a brief early skirmish. I'm really holding my breath for when you attach the bottom wing to struts and fuselage.

All the very, very best!

Mark

Dave:  Thank you for your support and warning about the interplane struts! This is one (of many) of my weak points. Maybe it had something to do with the dihedral of the lower wings that the Nieuports had. Were your struts too short or too long? Or what was exactely your problem if I may ask Dave?

Kind regards
Patrick

Patrick - I'm not sure if I assembled the lower wing correctly, but the struts did not match up at all with the location points/holes on the lower wing - my struts ended up way to forward (right off the leading edge) and angle inwards when they should obviously be upright.  There was just no way I could alter the model to get it correct.  I wonder now if it would have been better to attach upper wing before fitting the lower wings - it might then be possible to position the lower wing to match the interplane  struts to align properly.   In any case, I got totally frustrated and gave up with it - please don't let my bad experience put you off - it was most likely bad assembly on my part.

Regards

Dave

Patrick,
I will be happy to watch all of the Lovely Nieuport builds you want to do! You are off to a terrific start. Very clean work, and you might be the only Modeler to date to get that seat back bent without breaking! Your linen and wood colors are looking beautiful !!

My amigo took the words right out of my mouth...er, fingers?  ??? Beautiful start, my friend.  Please, build all the Nieuports you want.

Hello Mark,Dave, Warren  and Bud,

Thank you very much for your kind comments and advice my friends!

Mark:     Wow, that is no good news! I already suffered quite a bit with this build. At least you managed to build one out of two!  ;)

Dave:     Thank you for the explanation of what went wrong. If a great modeler like you had such problems, I really don't know where my build will end!  :o

Warren:   You are so right! But this year has been a struggle with all these complicated builds and kits that I am really looking forward to have a build without fitting problems, although a WnW kit is no guarantee for succes in my case!  ::)

Bud:        As always your words are very uplifting my friend. If I was a decent scratch builder I would even tackle the Nieuport Triplane!  8)

Kind regards
Patrick

Hello Bob, Martin, Terri and Lance,

Thank you all for your kind comments. I appreciate it tremendously and it certainly keeps me going! I must admit that Roden has made better kits than this one. Time will tell. It will be very hard though to equal what Jean (MS406) achieved with it. Thank you again!

Kind regards
Patrick

Patrick you have started very well, and if I may put a suggestion, do what YOU do and used others works as a guide and never as something to duplicate. Go on my man , go on! Best regards, jean.

Hello all,

A small update today. I was pleased I could close the fuselage completely now.

I added the instrument bar with a few instruments on it.

Cockpit cowling

Cabane struts (pin replaced by brass tube)

Awful joints, gaps like the Grand Canyon. A lot of filling ahead of me. The fuselage parts were not very delicately shaped

Cockpit cowling installed

Firewall and head rest

Thank you very much for passing by!

Kind regards
Patrick

Lovely set of instruments!

And I like where you're going with those pins, I reckon they'll help no end.
FWIW I think my troubles began with those front pillars. I still believe getting the top wing on first is the way to go, but if those pillars are anything less than the same height (yours look perfect) or the same angle (a little less easy to tell from the pics), it seems to have a knock-on effect with the geometry of the rest of the wing assembly.

But as I say, fingers crossed, you'll be okay... :)
