Roden 1/48 scale early Fokker built D.VII, Willi Gabriel
« on: October 30, 2014, 03:10:29 PM »
I should have my head examined, I reckon.  After all, I just finished my second D.VII (one of my least favorite Great War aircraft) in less than 2 years and here I am launching into yet another.  So, why am I doing it?  Not sure.  Maybe it's the fact that I really enjoyed building the last one so much.  Maybe it's the nearly endless array of colorful schemes.  Maybe it's the fact that these things take no time at all to build.  Most likely, though, it's the fact that Richard will be releasing his 1/48 cookie cutter sheets any minute now and the fact that Barry Berman has released his spectacular series of BEAM Fokker D.VII photo etch sheets and has graciously sent me the entire selection to try out, so how could I not.
This is the kit I've selected to try out all these goodies:

And this is the chosen scheme:

Sprue shots:

And finally, the BEAM PE set:

More, tomorrow...
Cheers,
Bud

Bud,
Like I said on your other build thread. I am really looking forward to seeing your Modeling Excellence take on this scheme!

Thanks for the encouragement, gents.  Hope I can live up to your expectations.
I have made a bit of a start.  Aside from the terrible wing root fit and the poor fitting, fiddly cowling bits, the most irritating aspect of this kit is the vague representation of the ammo cans, feed and ejection chutes.

So before doing anything, I had to get rid of those.

There are some promising looking ammo feed chutes in the BEAM set and if I can do a proper job of bending them into shape without completely buggering them up, I'll use them on some scratched ammo cans.
Cheers,
Bud

The PE looks awesome and I am sure you will nail the chutes! They will be a decided improvement!!

"Most likely, though, it's the fact that Richard will be releasing his 1/48 cookie cutter sheets any minute now..."

Hooray! I've had aRoden 1/48th DVII in the cache for quite a while, and I've been hoping that Aviattic would offer their lozenge sheets in cookie cutter 1/48th scale. Great  news!

Good luck with this build, Bud. It will be a solid guide for me when I get to my 1/48th DVII!  8)
Cheers!

Great choice, Bud.  I love these Roden D. VIIs and also can't wait for the lozenge decals.  Are the BEAM sets available yet?

Another build I am looking forward to following, Bud.  I admire your
work and I like the streaky paint schemes, so this is a great combination.
Onward and upward! :D

Cheers,
Ernie :)
