Too soon to post photos but I've experimented with a minute layer of varnish on the wooden parts, let's see how this goes...

The varnish didn't do much, I've completed construction of the undercarriage, the day I don't break some part of the undercarriage is the day I leave modelling, I'm now continuing on to work on the engine.
