Not put up a build log for a while but have worked up the courage to post one on my build of the WNW Albie DV.   I intend to mostly build OOB but have ordered some 'Bobs buckles' turnbuckles to try out on the rigging.
 


 I also ordered the decal set for Jasta 18 and have decided (my wife Jacquie helped me chose this scheme) to opt for the Olivier Beaulieu-Marconney late 1917.



Just a couple of days into the build so not a great deal to show at present.  The first thing I needed to do was eliminate the numerous (in awkward locations) pin holes on the inner fuselage (cockpit) by filling and then carefully sanding out as best I could when dry.   All wood parts were then pre-painted with a couple of coats of 'ochre' before using artist oils to try and simulate wood grain.   Used a combination of raw and burnt sienna and burnt umber.   This was all completed this evening so will now need to wait a couple of days before moving on.   Once dry I will then be able to seal in using clear orange followed by several coats of clear matt.

Nice beginning. The Albatros' esthetic, if you will, is the wooden construction and careful depiction of wood goes a long way to represent that. Looking forward to more progress shots.

Excellent start, Dave!  Your wood grain looks very convincing.  I'd get all the paint out of all those grooves, though, if you want everything to fit properly.  I'm looking forward to following this.  I just got the OAW version and hope to pick up some pointers on this kit.

Very effective Dave and I'm looking forward to seeing how it progress. I think oils over an appropriate base colour are just the thing for capturing a wood effect. As others have said be sure to clean paint from locating surfaces because the tolerances are very tight

Forgot to mention that before applying any paint, I carefully filled all the grooves (for all the formers) using liquid latex masking solution.  This is why the grooves look very thick and dark in the photos.   My theory being that I can simply pick out without having to scrape out paint from the grooves.

Not a great deal of progress to report at present.   Once the oil paint had dried, I sealed in with clear orange followed by several coats of clear.   Whilst this was drying, I knocked up a rough'n ready seat cushion made from Milliput.   

The next stage was to paint in some of the other details in the cockpit and the engine formers.   I then painted the seat and installed on the base mount.   I've also carefully picked out the dried latex mask from the groves in the fuselage where all the framework will sit.   Overall this worked well and just needed to touch in the adjacent areas where some paint was pulled away whilst removing.   

The next stage will be to start work on assembling some of the cockpit.

One word of advice, if I may: the "firewall" (the part to which the seat will be attached) had not been made out of wood, but out of fabric. Rule of thumb: If the aircraft is covered with Flugzeugstoff, then it is likely the "firewall" would be covered with lozenge fabric as well. If the wings were not covered with Flugzeugstoff, but painted with the standard colours (green and mauve), the firewall would be CDL.

 I simply followed the paint guide within the instructions.   That being the case then, I'll repaint this part CDL as you suggest.
