Not every day brings success.  :(

I tried to make the black borders, so I painted the surfaces with CDL, covered them with masking tape and then cut the outlines. The wings are quite ok with several spots to be corrected, unfortunately the fuselage and the elevator are a disaster.

Ondra, so sorry this happened, why do you think the wings turned out, but the fuselage didn't?  I was thinking of using tape and cutting out the outline on a 1/72nd build.

Hi Warren,

I think the reason is simple - the wings have basically straight lines so the masking tape can be cut using a ruler. On the other hand the shapes of the fuselage and the elevator with curves and various angles make the cutting much more difficult.

I will repaint all parts and try another method - thin stripes of black painted decal paper.

Cheers

I've thought of using that too. There are tow upcoming builds in which I've got to overcome this problem:

- Any Nie.11 with the dark outlines (as here) and any Nie.17 with the blue outlines on the wing, and

- The sky blue "return" on Fokker Dr.I fuselages and tailplanes.

I'm thinking of using Frisket film.

Another attempt on CDL and black outlines, for test only on the lower wing. Looks better, not perfect, but better.

This is what the Nie XI looks like now, the black lines are thicker than they should be but I will probably leave them that way.

You are doing a great job Ondra, working in this tiny scale is hard enough without having to do those really thin black lines but well done.

Looking good Ondra , doing that out lining in this scale is tricky . I like yours  :)

Have you ever tried a drafting pen with indian ink ? Not one of those disposable ones , one which you can refill .

Ondra, I agree with Terri on the good look of the plane so far, using a drafting pen on those edges to me appears a very difficult operation...  :-O

Thank you all very much for your encouraging comments. ;)

I took a look at the photograph of the original and must admit that the outlines are way too thick, about 2 as much as they should be, especially on the fuselage.

So, until I have found a proper method to replicate the black outlines, I will put the Nieuport aside and continue later.

It's Albie time. :)

Yeah, they are too thick & I admire your willingness to admit that. I suppose at 1/144 what you have is already a very thin line... I like Terri's idea-- tracing the edge of the part with a pen might work? If you could find a way to keep the pen at the same angle as you traced around it...

You are right, Bo, I also like Terri's idea (btw. many thansk to Terri for the inspiration).

I will now join the group build with the Albie D.Va and along with that I will be testing various techniques on pieces of plastic. I am sure there must be a way. And to be very honest I could not finish the model knowing the lines are wrong. :)
