Ruston 1000th Camel
« on: July 09, 2014, 04:58:56 AM »
This topic may not go very far but, hopefully, you chaps will give me some encouragement. I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to do it yet but...

I plan to build this:

The 1000th Camel built by Ruston Proctor of Lincoln.

My starter for ten.  :)

well you have certainly chosen a challenging paint scheme! I seem to recall a lengthy discussion on the scheme back on the Aerodrome. I will do a search and see what I find. There also may have been a thread in the Model Section but I am not sure if it can be accessed.
Good Luck and I am sure that someone here will have ideas to pass along.

Hello Squiffy:

I have wanted to do this and have been hoping someone would come out with decals; but alas, no such luck.  Check out this website: http://wwi-cookup.com/sopwith/camel/ruston1.html you may find some helpful hints there.   I will be watching to see how you do this.

Best of luck

Mark

Thanks, Mark. That link you gave is already in my opening post.  ;D

Whilst I've got some time at the computer, and since I made that opening post, I had an idea and have been busy.

I stuck the top wing in the scanner and then, using Photoshop, I have drawn on the pattern. The plan is to print this onto decal paper. I've used decal paper before for railway models but only for small things such as engine numbers. I've never printed a decal as large as this and I don't know how well it will settle in to all the ribs on the wings as it seems to be thicker than kit decals.

The other unknown is how well the printer will reproduce the colour. Will I have to paint the colour on the wing as an undercoat, or will the ink alone suffice? It's all a bit of an experiment  :o If it all goes wrong I can always paint it as a normal Camel....

You've chosen a colourful rendition of the Camel which should look great when done.

Good luck, on your build - I'll follow with interest, mate.

Excellent project and progress Squiffy!  I am so glad you have started this one.  Somehow, I had never heard of the Ruston Camel until a week ago.  It was pictured in the program for the contemporary air show at RAF Waddington in Lincoln, UK, which I had the good fortune to attend.  The picture and story appeared in an article on aviation history in Lincoln, which is where the Ruston aircraft factory was located, as this was a license-built machine.  I was immediately taken with the scheme and hope to do it in 1/32 some day.  ;D. I will follow your build with great interest.

Regards,

Bob

Great choice of subject and scheme Squiffy, I had thoughts of doing this in 1:32 scale but I will be following very closely to see how you tackle it in 1:72 scale, good luck with the project.

What a gorgeous scheme. As for the decal paper, it should snuggle fine. I would probably make it a 2 part (at least) decal so you can concentrate on smaller pieces. Maybe cut down the center? It will give you more control. I found Micro Sol works well for snuggling the home made decals.

Hi,

I did one of these in 1/48 a while ago, I used a fine tip "gundam marker" pen for the black "rays", which produced very well defined lines.  Whatever "ink" these markers use goes on paint and plastic with no problem (what its supposed to do, after all).  I got it from a Japanese shop advertising on ebay.
