Lance,
You are doing absolutely stellar work on the 28. The xheme is lovely! The Aviattic cowling looks awesome and the seat is a much better fit than I got with Rons original.

I can well imagine how tricky that cowling was to execute, but master it you did! I hate to repeat myself but this is turning out to be a very colourful bird and well worth all of the time, effort, and aggravation Lance. It sounds as though this a bit of a 'donkey' of a kit.  ;D  However, when she's finally finished, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you did a stellar job of it.

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks very much for the generous remarks, Guys. All said and done it's not a really horrible Kit however I've had to install pins in almost every join; hopefully it will all go together smoothly in the end. I'm looking forward to toning down the finish with a solid coat of S/G Clear and then getting some Post Shading and Weathering done. In fairness I suspect some of the problems encountered with the cowling decals stem from some very subtle differences between the kit and Aviattic versions. The latter seems a little "deeper" in profile however fits the model better then the original IMHO.
The rigging looms ominously on the horizon; I've no idea as yet of how I'm going to handle the Wooden Lathe "inserts" between the doubles in the inter plane section...............I've got Dal's article front and center and some more ideas in Dr. Tom Morgan's "Build-off" notes with Lance Krieg several years back in Windsock to get me going in hopefully the right direction.
More in a week or so.............(got to get going on the D.VII Group Build real soon!)
Cheers,
Lance

Hello Lance:

I think you have done outstanding work on this model to date.  The stripes on the cowling are a bugger to get right and you managed to get them on and straight.  I like your colors and think they look fine, however, a drop or two of sand in the dull coat can take away that brightness without changing the color.
Looking forward to seeing how you deal with the laths on the rigging.

Best

Wonderful job, Lance!  The decals, especially the cowling stripes are first rate.
I can imagine the patience needed to get those right, but you have prevailed
beautifully. For a kit that fought you at every step, you have come up with a
stunner.  I look forward to the finishing updates.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello Lance,

Sorry I am so late for a comment on your tremendous build of an a/c that I like so very much. You are making a real beauty of it my friend. I mention a few things. Very nice work on the evergreen sheets for the woodwork, an engine that is really superb (extremely well painted and detailed), you did a fantastic job on Ron’s (Aviatic) seat, looking very real,  very nice camo painting and true colors, magnificent engine cowling and the decaling is perfect ( the cowling isn’t easy is it?). In one word a fantastic bild Lance!

Kind regards
Patrick

Patrick,
Thanks so much for the kind words, your timing is perfect as you have been much on my mind the past 48 hours. I had a horrible time with the cabanes, failed totally in fact despite installing pins and using my own jig in the process. I managed to remove them, clean them up, and then attempt a second time...........then recalled you had employed a unique Jig of your own design on your Build of this Kit. My sincere compliments Patrick, I replicated your Jig, put pins in both ends of the struts, installed them, and the upper wing fits like a glove and is in absolutely perfect alignment!
I'll be posting an update later today or tomorrow with suitable recognition of IFF 418's contributions to this Build; you certainly saved this one from a trip to the Hall of Shame!
    Many Thanks......
Cheers,
Lance

A short Workbench Update to get this Log up to date. I'm now approaching the final assembly point of this project; lots of touch-ups done and more to do, pre-rigging in progress, and final details to add. The cross bracing was added to the under-cowl between the forward landing gear mounting points and then the Post Shading, which I originally planned to not do was started. The Pre-shading was all but lost in the bright colours and finish so I decided to add a little contrast and wear to the wing surfaces.

I used my usual Chalk Pastel method for the Post Shading, sealing the application with a light coat of Model Master Acryl Semi Gloss.

I then, as mentioned last entry, did a second attempt at getting the Cabanes properly installed, having failed miserably on the initial attempt. I used Patrick's Jig design (IFF 418) from his previous Build of the same Kit and it worked perfectly..............one of the reasons I like this Forum! Here's his simple but effective solution to the complete lack of engineering in the Kit design for upper wing mounting! My Thanks to Patrick for providing a grand solution to a challenging problem!

With the Cabanes "pinned" and carefully aligned/mounted in the jig with Tamiya Tape the assembly was mounted and secured to the fuselage and then cemented in place with ultra thin CA, a more liberal application being added once the jig was removed.

The result was perfect, and the Cabanes were then rigged.

I also added the windshield, a bit of cleaning and touch up required here............ The kit supplied windshield is very "basic" to say the least!

The guns were also installed at this stage. I elected to use the Kit Guns saving the GasPatch "Jewels" for another subject as this Build is not progressing nearly as nicely as I would like. The dust etc. is a bonus but will be cleaned up before the completion!

Finally I did a bit of weathering to the undersides, photos to follow, and today it's onto the rigging and upper wing mounting, should be quite a day!
Cheers,
Lance

Man that post-shading sure turned out nicely Lance. You've really nailed that technique. While the kit may be fighting you all the way, you're doing a superb job with it. In my case though, I think I'll avoid it like the plague.

That's an interesting MG alignment I'm seeing here. It's definitely a new on me.

Is it strictly an alignment issue for the cabanes which causes all the grief in installation? By that I mean are there no good mounting points for them? Whatever the case, I'll bet it's a great relief that you've got the issue whipped.

Cheers,

Chris

The wings are really lovely; I love the effect you were able to achieve with the pastels.  Definitely a revelation for me.
