Nice !  :)

I do like the effect you got for salt sea air wear , but I do agree with you that it is to brown .

Hello Dagmar:

I agree with Terri and your assessment the brown not being the right color, that being written, you are on the right track with the pattern and a little experiment with colors and ou will have it.  It does look like canvas though, your weathering and shading with oils is a nice touch.  The work on the wings and tail is coming along nicely.
I will be looking forward to your next update.

Best

Looking really great and I like the effect the foil gave as a base! I have a couple of questions. As you stated the Early W4s were painted on Hex. So would the Bulkhead be painted in the same manner being an internal structure? Don't take me wrong as I think it will certainly add a lot of color to a rather monotone wood interior so from an artistic standpoint I like your choice.
I will have to search but there were some good threads about the painted Lozenge on the Aerodrome forum. It seems to me that 3 colors were involved and were actually not the same as the later blue and blue grey base as the printed fabric. Brown was mentioned IIRC. I only remember because I was building a 1/48th Eduard kit in an early scheme. At any rate your pattern looks excellent and I admire your abilities!!!

Dear colleagues,

Once again a big thank you for the nice comments!

Bob (apparently I missed your post), indeed, the span and the chord of the W.4 are greater than the D.I. It couldn't be that simple unfortunately...  I found Chuckt5's thread on the floats and will keep it close at hand when tackling the floats myself. Thanks!

RAGIII, no problem for pointing out! I'm far from sure if the bulkhead would have been painted in naval lozenge. It even seems logic that it would not have been. I just took the occasion to try the pastel approach.
Conserning the colors, I've checked the info I could lay my hands on, including the threads on the Aerodrome forum. Indeed, it seems that at least two different sets of three colors were involved: a blue/grey set an a brown set. Going through the mini datafile even revealed that a W.4 had both sets on its wings. This opens very interesting opportunities I think...

And now where we are in the build. Still struggling with the wings. However, I arrived at the point the wings looked good enough to add the ribs. First engraving each rib location, than glueing the stretched sprue ribs... Once again a lot of filling and sanding on the planning...

To break the monotony of building the wings, the engine support was on the menu...

Till next time,

Dagmar

Dear colleagues,

Thanks for the support during the boring wing filling, sanding and priming. Finally I've reached the point to call it even so details can be added: strut support, hinges, rib tapes,.... But that's for a next time.

To make sure reading about the build doesn't become as boring as the actual build of the wings itself (and also to keep myself motivated), I put the guns on the menu. Once again the PART photo etch set came to the rescue...

Till next time,

Very nice work on the LMG, Dagmar.

But be careful, I'm fairly sure that you need this mechanism on the LMG on the Albatros W.4.
The cocking lever was later in use.

No posts on this forum are boring, all good exciting stuff.

Your MG's are excellent and I look forward to seeing more work on the wings, this is an excellent build.

Dear colleagues,

Thanks for the kind words. They are most encouraging and slightly becoming addictive...

Bertl,
Well, there you have me. Wanting to speed up, I missed on this one. The cocking levers just give that extra though. (Lightweight excuse for being too lazy to redo the LMG's; laziness now being encouraged by a picture of a D.II with LMG's exceptionally being equiped with two handles appearing to be extended cocking levers; artistic liberty?).

New phase in the build: interior fuselage painting. I started with marking the location of the bulkheads with Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow, as the objective is to preshade each part of the fuselage defined in this way, individually.

Colors used for preshading/modulating the engine compartment are Mr Hobby Aqueous Hobby Color Chocolate Brown H406 and Tamiya XF-57 Buff.

The upper part cockpit compartment is sprayed with XF-52 Flath Earth and Mr Hobby Aqueous Hobby Color Radome H318; the lower part with Tamiya XF-64 Red Brown and Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow. I always applied first the dark colour and secondly sprayed the lighter one.

This will be the basis for creating the wood effect with oil paint but that's for within a few weeks after a short break as I have other 'to do's' on my list now...

Till next time,

Dagmar
