I have no experience with Roden kits but I think if you have enough motivation a hard model may force you to learn hell lot of things in no time on the other hand it may discourage you to modelling for good... My first WWI subject was Airco DH2 from Smer - of course it would be easier and much nicer to buy the Eduard`s kit but the experience I got is priceless.

So after several hours of just staring at the Nieuport, and the arrival of the WNW Se5a, I came to the decision to shelve the 24 for the moment, so as not to give it flying lessons, and jump n the Hisso. So let's wade right in...

An overall shot, that lets me know I have some adjusting and touch-up to do.

After seeing this one I went back and feathered the wood grain a bit more

I just noticed another touch-up I need to do.

Dry fit test flight...

I need to finish up the seat bottom and get it blended in with the rest of things. I discovered by accident the a thin coat of Burnt Umber makes the leather pop nicely. I will have to see how it dries.

So from here I will do some touching up and the control column tonight, and hopefully start on the engine tomorrow while it all dries.

Please feel free to comment, as I am frankly in awe of the collective talent here, and I want to learn.

Hello T.H.:

You certainly are off to a start. I can't say I blame you for putting the Roden kit away. I have one that I go back to occassinally, eventually it will get finished. The SE5a is a tough kit. It is one of the four first issued by WNW. I have a build log that may help you out. http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=996.0. It is basically a lessons learned from when I built/ruined my first one, I built a second one, and this was the rebuild of the first one. As you are just starting on this kit, you may find the build log helpful and allevieat some of the frustrations that this kit can generate. Good Luck.

Thanks for the link Mark. Your blog was one of the ones I read in preparation for much build, and I took copious notes. I bought a tablet so I could reference the many fantastic builds on this site and not have to leave my workshop. I only hope I can live up to the big "brothers" here.

You will do fine T.H. Each model is a learning experience and the best one you ever built is the one you are working on now. Take your time and follow the sequence in the build log. It will be an enjoyable build, albeit challenging.

Really good start! I think you will learn that on this forum No one needs to live up to anyone else's build! We all model to the best of our ability and happily post our progress

I got some work done between last night and today, thought I would share some pictures...

First I have done some more work on the "office", including the cables for the ailerons.

Next, the front framing. It is much more subtle in person

I am very pleased with how this turned out, the instrument panel.

The fuselage halves, dreaming of their upcoming union...

And finally the heart of the beast under construction

The seam on the engine is not noticeable in person, but it will need to be addressed for sure.

Thank you one and all for looking, I have been a member of many many online forums and this is by far the greatest group I have seen.

The instrument panel looks exceptionally well, everything else looks like it is coming along nicely as well. Do you plan on having the engine compartment open? If not, most of the engine details will be covered. Looking forward to watching along as you continue to progress through the build.

I have been busy with the job that keeps me in hobby, and had a set back that annoyed the daylights out of me. I spent hours on the control cables in the cockpit, buttoned up the fuselage halves, and stopped for the day. When I went back the next afternoon, the cabling was a mass of ez line, looking as if a 1/32 scale cat had been playing with it. So my His so will not have interior cables. As near as I can figure, the plastic cement got on it... oh well. Also the ring sight for the Vickers went "ting" and disappeared. No worries... Here are some more photos of where I am in the build.
