Santos Dumont Demoiselle 1/48
« on: March 11, 2014, 06:44:08 AM »
It`s my rather unfortunate attempt on scratch building... I` ve started it some time ago and decided to finish it anyway. It`s ugly I know, and crude and... I will add some wires and cables and will try to forget about this one and finally start a hopefully more decent model.

Best regards
Filip

Thanks Filip for posting your build of the Demoiselle, a very unique and historic aircraft. What you have done so far is extra good, the engine looks to be very well detailed, I'm looking forward to seeing the rigging fitted which will make this model look even better, well done.

Brilliant work, as usual, Filip!  I'm looking forward to seeing her all rigged up.
Cheers,
Bud

Des and Bud you are both too kind... I think this one should  end up in the hall of shame section.

Hall of shame? By no means! It is a very fine effort, Filip. It brings to my mind the great movie "Those magnificent men in their flying machines" and that funny Frenchman who flew this lovely birdie! Thanks for showing it. And in the right section!

Filip, I think this is a nifty model that captures the spirit of the original. No shame in this one.

I think it looks great! Thanks for sharing, Filip. Found this postcard of Santos Dumont's Demoiselle to celebrate your model:

Hi Filip.
You're too hard on yourself, but I guess that's what drives you to such high standards. It's a nice piece of work and I'd been wondering when someone would have a crack at the Demoiselle.

Best wishes
Nigel

I want to second all the opinions above - I think that this is one wonderfull project and you should be proud of the result!
Can't wait to see it rigged and please, can you show some close up pictures of the engine and some other key details?
Best regards,
Sasho

I too agree with the others Filip. If you put this in the Hall of Shame I will ask that the moderator take it out and put it in a prominent place where it can be properly and rightfully admired. The detail is amazing and when it is rigged it will truly capture the spirit of the original. This really is an excellent model and fully worthy of you. Thank you for posting it and PLEASE put up more photos when it is finished so that we really CAN admire it

May I be permitted to make a personal suggestion? I suspect that this was a difficult build, even for someone with your skill, and that as a result you became a little frustrated at times. That can lead to very negative feelings: the more a person aims at perfection the worse the problem can be. This leads to an over-reaction and we then become over-critical of what we have done. I write this as one who has repeatedly gone through the above process, (and sometimes continues to do so), with the result that I too am often dissatisfied with what I have done, while around me others are saying "wow'' how good everything is. I suspect that you are a perfectionist and this problem is worse for people of that disposition. I am not a psychologist but I am a retired teacher and I have witnessed this reaction on very many occasions with able students who have seriously undervalued their achievements because they felt that they could have done more, even when they could not. In your case I ask what more could you reasonably have done?

If this belongs in the hall of shame then everything I've made belongs in the bin! It's a fine looking model and the rigging will finish it off nicely.

Thank you all of you for your most encouraging words. I think your comments will give me enough motivation to finish the bird. I will certainly take some pics of this build as soon as I will have some rigging on.
Lone Modeller I think you might be right... I expected this one to be much easier and as the frustration grew I have become disencouraged by the results. Like I said I will finish this one even though I`m not satisfied with the outcome.
Best regards
Filip

Filip,
I am glad you are continuing to work on  this BEAUTIFUL scratch build! If I could only build something as ugly I would be thrilled!
