The View from my Desk

   Had to share these photos taken from the window beside my Model Desk a few minutes ago. These two young bulls wandered into the yard to breakfast on one of my struggling maple trees this morning. Since I already have an ample stock of moose meat in the freezer and they are thankfully protected in our immediate area it's nice to just watch the little guys destroy a tree that took 15 years to grow in this climate ; I'd give these two a minimum of 700 pounds each as they stand. They are about 12 meters from my back door in these photos and refused to leave until I slapped two pieces of plywood together a bunch to scare them off; yelling, hand clapping, and a barking dog merely amused them and they continued to eat my poor tree!
   I'd like to say it's a joy to live on the edge of the wilderness at times like these however minus 30 degrees C. and a brisk wind out there trumps a moment with nature today!

Stop looking out the window and get back to that Pfalz cockpit immediately! We need your inspiration.

On a serious note take care in these extremes. Your minus 30 certainly out-trumps our minus 18 of a couple of years ago and the two beasts savaging the maple tree would have no problem with the family of deer that took out a season's cabbage planting in one go here.

That for sure is a special view. I have seen moose cows, once south of Yellowstone one just wandered next to me on a parking lot and another somewhere near Jasper, but never these guys. I just have a rabbit that has found a convenient home under our garden shed, that likes to eat fresh flowers in the morning. Those don't take 15 years to grow. I do like the space you're living in. It gets a little bit crowded in the western part of the Netherlands.

Glad you all enjoyed the interlude. Moose are lovely to watch and normally very docile however can be unpredictable, particularly during their mating season or in caring for the safety of their young. I've seen these two siblings often this winter, they appear to be bedding in a frozen swampy area towards the far end of my acreage. Although I've had young cows in this close I've never had a bull or two this close to the house, really neat! This horribly severe winter hasn't bothered these boys, they are fat, shiny, and no evidence of disease or ticks is apparent.

That's nearly a 60 degree C difference between your temp and the temps we have been experiencing here on the eastern seaboard down under!!

Some parts of South Australia hit 50 degree's a couple of days ago - blech

I suppose we miss out on the Moose, but you guys miss out on the Cicada cacophony

I bet where Lance is located it was around -40 without the wind chill for New Year's. A 90 degree temperature swing! What an incredible rock we live on!

Hey Lance great pics. If only you could train them to mow lawns in the summer. We went from the fridgid temps to a projected 25cm of snow today with more thru the week. All there for my commute to YYZ - Im thinkin a 2 hr drive in the morning.....5 more years til I can just sit at the window and watch......

   What a wonderful world we live in Steve. Don't envy you the commute in all that snow and best wishes on getting past those "final five". I now get to sit at the window and watch. In the case of this morning all could see was a thermometer that reads minus 36, and there's a breeze out there as well, Thank gawd I don't have to drive to work!

Very nice photo as well Mark. I've had deer up on our front step eating the flowers out of our planters there, they too are magnificent creatures to watch. Country living is indeed hard to beat!
