Hello, Bud -

Like the colour scheme you have chosen for your DVII - all your rib shading looks the part too.

Look forward to your next update.

Regards

Dave

Bud,
The latest update is Fantastic! I love the red and white and those black markings set the whole thing off! Your shading as always is top notch!

Thanks for all the kind words, guys.  Right now I'm struggling to get all of the cowling bits to coexist amicably.  Doing a lot of whittling, scraping, carving and sanding, but I'm still enjoying this build tremendously.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks, Des!
I wasn't sure how I wanted to approach the engine.  I knew that I wanted to build this model fully cowled, so I didn't see much point in adding a lot of detail to the lower portion of the Mercedes.  I did, however, want to replace the valve springs since they would pretty much be all that you would be able to see with the cowling in place.
First I cut away the crude kit representations of the valve springs.

Then I added new ones cut from guitar string.

I also decided to forgo my usual grimy wash on the crank case since it wouldn't be visible.

Here she sits partially cowled.

And fully cowled.

See?  Not much of the engine is visible.  I think I'll build another with the engine exposed.
Cheers,
Bud

Bud, Nice work on the Valve Springs and a good decision on the engine overall! Your engine cover panels came out looking terrific as goes the overall scheme!

Very sharp Bud!  Good call on the engine.  I'll do the same on a fully-cowled version.

How did you do the rib-shading on this one?  It looks like Tamiya smoke airbrushed over tape strips, but I know that you often use pastels.  Whichever, it is very effective!  ;D

Bob

She's looking great Bud!  You were right about the engine...nice work on
the springs.  I'm also wondering about the shading. Sprayed on or pastels?
You've certainly got a winner there,  Bud. Looking forward to more photos.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thank you very much, my friends!  Bob and Ernie, the post-shading is indeed pastels.  My usual method of application is to use a small sponge type make-up applicator.  Very cheap and readily available at any pharmacy.  They work great for pre-shading, but for post-shading you want something with a lighter touch, so I went with the method used by Paul Carpenter (Carpo) and used a small, soft bristled brush with a chisel tip.
Cheers,
Bud

  Bud,
Outstanding post-shading my old friend.

Thanks, Gregory!  I think it may be just a tad over-done, though.  The hazards of doing that sort of thing at night with poor lighting, I suppose.  It seemed much lighter while I was doing it.  Then again, I'm sure the clear coat darkened it some.  Oh, well.  I'll know better next time. ;)
Cheers,
Bud
