So, closed up and first round of painting..

This is just the base layer prior to individual panels being masked and toned up or down to provide contrast, then highlights/ lowlights then an overall thin wash to tie it together (well, that's the plan anyway).

I've gone for a subtle change of shading - darker at the bottom, getting lighter towards the top - whether this survives the upcoming steps is debatable, but I thought I'd give it a go.. (I think it's called zenithal lighting?)






I'm trying to keep the whole thing as light as possible to let the wood effect show..

Any help welcomed! It's all a bit experimental..

Coming along now. I'm quite pleased with the base tones now - it's how I pictured it anyway. The proof of the pudding will be after I've got a decal on though.. Not quite sure what to expect! I haven't done a final glaze to tie it in yet - I think it's subtle enough already, so I'll probably leave that stage - although I'm tempted to do a slighter darker wash at the base to emphasise the Zenithal lighting effect - as predicted, my earlier efforts seem to have disappeared! 






Bo Did you clear varnish at this stage? I want to so I can do a pin wash pre decalling - I'd rather not do it post decals in case of bleeding - I did read somewhere that, unusually, the decals go on better to a less glossy finish?

I'm not sure, I think you are referring to one of the lozenge decals -- unless Uschi has changed his recommendation. I know the new decals are on a different carrier film. At any rate, when in doubt, experiment!

I wouldn't be afraid of applying washes after sealing the decals if necessary. Anyway, I applied my decals to a glossy surface to avoid silvering -  that was my biggest concern.

To give you an idea what to expect...  this is prior to applying future & decals. As you can see the shading is pretty dramatic and I have applied some pin washes:

That's helpful, I'll gloss up, then pin wash before decalling. I notice you've nailed pre decals.. I've gone for the HGW nail set - which is a decal but the decal bit peels off and leaves the nails.. So I was planning on doing this at a later stage, but they're are going to be pretty noticeable and if I look at period pictures you can hardly see them? So still undecided on that.

I tried nail decals but rejected them as you could see the edges of the film. Instead I used a pouncing wheel to mark then going back over with a leetle bitty drill. I did this after paint and before grain decals (as you can see above).

But check out PrzemoL's under construction and  completed D.V for really effective nails. He did his nails first, before paint, then hit them with a wash. That's how I'll do mine next time...

Yep, that's a cracking build - the nails look really good..

Although my HGW set doesn't leave a carrier film as the top layer gets peeled off to leave the nails in situ.. Although, surprisingly, they don't come with any instructions?! So I've no idea how they work! I'll have to do a bit of experimentation - has anyone used these? I'd be grateful for any tips..

Well, the woods on.. 


The Uschi decals are incredible - the variation (my base coat - not the decals) is probably over the top to be strictly realistic, but to be fair that was what I was after. I probably should have done the base colour generally lighter again to make it more 'plywood'. Tbh it probably looks like a cross between plywood and walnut! (The 3 lighter panels in the picture look exactly like the plywood finish I was after) but, like it or not, they certainly look like wood!


I've made one booby - one of the panel's grain direction is wrong - they all should be lengthways along the fuselage (I think?) 





It's got a coat of Klear on top to seal it all in as the decals are pretty delicate. I'm going to experiment with the nails next - if they're not too over the top, then the kit decals, seal that in and that'll be the wood done..
