WNW's 'Wooden Wonders' Albatros D.va
« on: August 23, 2013, 12:16:11 AM »
Oh no - another Albatros  :P

I've made this kit before, but it was my first effort at a Wingnuts (apologies for the picture - only a small competition - it's just that this one shows the wood to its best effect)

I was happy with it at the time, but I was woefully uninformed - so no extras, no turnbuckles etc, no help from the forum! ::) I was pleased with the wood effect (using oils) but this time is going to be all about the wood - I've got the Uschi Van Rosten wood decals to experiment with  ;D

This morning was like Christmas after the postman had been:

I like this bit - a virgin and untouched kit that has all the potential to be a National Champion (until I start it..) I'm really going for this one - I've ordered just about every extra I can find. I've even ordered the HGW decal set to act as my template for the Uschi decalling (they're sheets & the HGW are 'cookie cut') - although having seen the HGW in the flesh they look pretty good to me -although I have heard they don't go on well - I may experiment anyway.. Anyone have experience of these?

I've got the WNW's 'Wooden Wonders' decal set. I'm undecided on 'GISI' or 'EMMA' (Red 3) - Emma has the Lozenge, Gisi doesn't - it may depend on if I can get a lozenge set in time..

My extras are:

Steven's excellent spoked wheel (Emma has this in Wingnut's period photo)

WNW's Wooden Wonders Decal set 30018

Uschi Van der Rosten wood decals - WGSF48-B (knotless) and WGSF48-C (for variation)

HGW wood decals 532008 (for a template)

Doug Craner's wood Niendorf propellor

HGW Fabric seat belt set 132507 (I may try and get a resin seat cushion too.. Did the Alby's all have a cushion? The seat part is bare on the kit..)

Master Models Brass Spandau set 32-023

Taurus Models springs & plug sets D3202c & 3204 (although I may make my own plugs this time)

Gaspatch turnbuckles 'One End' (I haven't gone for the 'Albatros' ball type as I thought fixing would be an issue..)

Gaspatch Anemometer

Old Propeller Resin Exhaust

Old Propeller Resin Manifold

Lozenge set - Wood & Wire (Albatros set 32xxx)

Eduard photo etch for Albatros D.III (32-583)

HGW 321010 nail heads

HGW PE exterior set 132056

Bobs Buckles  :D

Do you reckon brass instrument bezels are worth getting?

Thanks again for looking - (I can't finish the Fokker until I get Steven's Wheels so I'm hoping to get stuck into this one in the next few days  ;))

Ps please don't add up how much I've spent on this!!  :o

Cheers

Guy

Looks good Guy, great kit and great extras, although you have missed some extras, Taurus manifold nuts, Wood & Wire seat and cushion and Wood & Wire faded lozenge decals.

P.S.  I know what you mean about the cost of the extras.

Cheers

Pete.

OK you have my full and undivided attention :-) Ohhhhhhhh boy what a glorious kit and set of extras. Can I order a front row seat in advance please.

Cant wait to follow this one, i have only just ordered the kit myself these past couple of days so this will be an epic journey for me to learn from.

Great choice Guy, thanks for sharing,

Martin.

Guy,
......................and I thought I get carried away! Nice inventory, and a Wooden DV and/or Va is right up there on my list as well. I highly recommend brass bezels. Try the Aeroclub 1:32 Etch Instrument Bezels, excellent product and when applied with some Future over the decal instrument faces they work wonders. I compliment Kit Instrument Decals with Airscale Product AS32 WWI, "Instrument Dial Decals" as well.
Good luck with this build, I'll be following your progress with great interest.
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks chaps,

Yep, really excited about this one - how the wood turns out will definitely be make or break for me - I'm picturing a light/newish plywood look rather than varnished wood, but we'll see how it pans out..

Looks like I'll have to get some bezels then..  ::)

Ps Martin - how come you've ordered another kit when there's about a year of Gotha left..  :o

Wow, Guy!  This is going to be a great time!  You can never have enough Albatros's! With
all the extra goodies, you'll end up with a beauty, even better than your gorgeous winning example...congratulations, by the way.  Looking forward to the start of the wooden wonder.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Your first effort looks extraordinary, Guy, and this one is really showing promise.  I used the HGW sheet for the 1/48 Oeffag and I was very happy with the result.  They are not that difficult to use and are worth what little extra effort is required.  They are not a true cookie cutter decal.  Each panel is a little over-sized and needs trimming after placement, but they look great when you're done.
Cheers,
Bud
