Eduard Albatros D.III OEFFAG 253
« on: June 22, 2013, 05:39:31 PM »
I'm a little embarrassed to up load my work because of the superbly hi level of modelling found on this forum.
But here goes.
Any advice to make my models better would be greatly appreciated. I have ordered some wood grain decals for the exterior of the aircraft.
And any advice on rigging and especially mounting the top wing would be extremely appreciated.

Hi Fred,
Glad you worked up the nerve to post pics. You're off to a great start. I really like the interior bits.

Regarding rigging, there are two main methods.
Everything you need to know about the eyelet and tube method of rigging can be found here and here.

Another popular method is the "drill thru the wing" method. See Przemol's recent Alb D.III build here in under construction for a great example.

You have two basic choices for rigging material. The overwhelming favorite for 1/32nd scale seems to be Maxima Chameleon 2lbs test fishing line, which is a little over .1mm in diameter. The other choice is elastic 'EZ line" or it's equivalent from the sewing department. I've never used the stuff myself, hopefully someone else can comment further.

As far as fixing the wing, again, I'm making stuff up here because I haven't actually done this part in nearly 40 years, but, here's what I've picked up, and what I intend to do myself:

1) take the time to construct a decent jig. One that will allow you to set the the wing with the correct stagger and alignment, and which will support the model and the wing during assembly. There are various jigs you can buy, or you can build them out of Legos or cardboard or other flotsam you might have lying around. If you hunt around here you'll find various people's solutions.

2) use a relatively slow setting adhesive for fixing the struts. A lot of people seem to prefer old fashioned plastic model glue in a tube for this. I'll probably use epoxy, because I like the fact that it doesn't depend on melting the parts in question in order to function. At any rate, either way, the slow set gives you time to tweak and adjust as necessary.

Hope this helps.

Nothing at all to be embarrassed about, Fred.  You're off to a great start.  I finished an Oeffag not too long ago using the HGW wood grain decals.  If it's any help at all, here's a link to that build:

Hi Bud

Thanks for the encouragement, and for the link to your build.  It looks great and I'll study it for some inspiration. Coincidentally, the decals I ordered are the same ones you mentioned. I'm stoked!

Cheers Fred

My air compressor is getting swapped due to a warranty issue and I couldn't wait to get it back to paint the interior so i brushed painted Vallejo Panzer Aces New Wood 311 and washed with Vallejo Umber shade wash 73203.  it'll be hard to see once the fuselage is closed up but I think it looks ok and "wood grainy". (I got some wood grain painting practice in.) For the exterior i will use wood decals by HGW 548009 1/48 Decal Albatros D.III OEFFAG TRANSPARENT.

The engine looks ok to me but if anyone has any ideas to help improve it by all means please post them. Also the top little peice some how got lost so i replaced it with a circuit board transistor mount which was cut, and bent to "look" as though it is part of the engine... purists will cringe but I'm ok with it  8).

A different way to do wood grain that will drastically cut down on drying time. I like it!

Cheers,

Chris

Your engine and interior work looks very good, I really like the wood colour, it's coming together quite nicely.

Hi Bo

Thanks for the advice  :) It is much appreciated.
I have come up with this: http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=1978.msg32140#new for a jig.

I hope it works I should be ready to test it in a few days. Fingers crossed.

Cheers

I measured the seat belts from Eduard's Fokker D.VII  to just a bee's knee thicker than 1mm, so I'm going to use some Mr Hobby masking tape (which is die cut in 1mm and 2mm thicknesses) for the seat belts.

The wire is 8 amp fuse wire which i used to make "buckles". One down 3 to go. It should look the part once complete.

She's coming along very well, Fred.  Your woodwork is a
heck of a lot quicker drying than oils, and looks the part
as well.  All in all, it looks really good.  Thanks for sharing with us.

Ernie
