RNAS Ambulance
« on: March 20, 2013, 07:20:35 AM »
At Des and Paul's request here's the build thread for my Rolls Royce Ambulance. This conversion is based on the old Airfix 1911 Rolls Royce and includes a little bit of scratch building as well. I hope you enjoy this project and as always any and all comments are welcomed and very much appreciated.

The beginning. As you can see most of the donor kits parts were shall we say useless for this project due to warping. Other parts such as the body weren't needed and suffered from warping as well. Task one was to perform a little surgery and remove the offending parts.

Adding the first little details to the frame.  My Pyro 1909 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost was used as a pattern for detailing the underside.

Early work on the Cab interior.

  Test Fitting with Rupert.

Detailing the Ambulance body interior. Played a bit with different sized bunk frames .

One of four stretchers made up and its bunk frame.

 A few Blankets.

Sometimes in need of a swabbing out, a bucket and mop just in case.

All the interior additions in place.

That's very good and an interesting change from aeroplanes!
I've toyed with the idea of building a field workshop to go with my Triplane.  Only trouble is it would have to be 1/3 scale!

Greg,
Something very different and fascinating. What did you use for the canvas on the stretcher and also the blue sheets/blankets, they are very nicely done?!
Cheers,
Lance

I'm so glad you've brought this one over, my old friend.  It was such a joy to watch her come together when you built her and I'm going to enjoy following along once again.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks Gregory for posting your build here, it is so good to see your fantastic work again, this is a real inspiration to anyone wanting to convert one of these old kits into something truely worthwhile, I can't wait to see the remainder of the build.

  Lance,
I appreciate your kind words my old friend. The canvas for both the stretchers and the blanket are made of common kitchen foil. Tried Lead Foil first but it proved a tad bit thick.

Give it a shot my old friend , no doubt you could every bit as good as I did. Besides it really is nearly as easy as it looks.
