1/32 Roden Siemens Schukert DIII

Dear all,

Showing my completed Roden SSW DIII model.

Mostly built OOB with details to cockpit,  MG's (minor); opened up all molded hand holds, footstep and underside louvres; brass pinned all struts, landing gear, axle, tailskid and all control surfaces for added strength.

Brush painted as always and rigged using 0.11 mm fishing line.   Painted the interplane struts which was far more simpler than trying to apply decals to these items.

Completed to represent aircraft of Paul Leim, Kampfeinsitzer Staffel 4B, Freiburg, Germany, September 1918.

Very nice job on what van be a bit of a challenging kit. The end result looks really good, an attractive plane and it's nice to see the kit built up so well.

Lovely work Dave, that looks gorgeous! The lozenge in particular stands out for me, as does the fuselage varnish.

Tim - yes, there are some areas of tricky fit on this kit - pretty normal for a Roden kit to be honest ......

I tackle the area you referred too by lots of careful test fitting; once I had the setup I wanted I used shims (cut sections of plastic card) to fill the large gaps and (once set) by trimming, filing and filing.  Also, using pins for all the struts really helped to improve the overall fit of the upper wing and undercarriage.

I have to write that it looks better when seen for real than in the photos Dave!! This is another of your first class models and I know how much trouble you had with it - but looking at the completed model one would never have guessed. That really is a stunner.

And great, that you were convinced to embed the photos saving us the need to use the links.

For the photos, I played a little with two of them. I trimmed them to show more of the model and changed the contrast, brightness and saturation trying to improve the results of a poor lighting you used when taking them. (to this end I use a free program IrfanView - very much recommended). My piece of advice - use a lamp to lighten the model side to be visible in the photo, especially when shooting against a bright whitish background.

Warren - thanks, mate.  Yes, these are the lozenge decals from the kit.  These lozenge decals if you use a bit of care work really well.   I've also noticed that on Roden's latest kits that their decals have improved generally.


Prez - your a kind star! - thank you.   Photography was never my strong point and I took these using my phone so should have used flash when taking them.
