Was Tone Bayetto an ace?......
« on: September 08, 2025, 07:44:25 AM »
I think I want to do this a/c for the "aces" GB but I can not find if Tone Bayetto was actually an ace.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Allan Buttrick

Thanks Alexis,
I had found that page before and read it but still was not sure exactly how many confirmed victories he had.
I think the universal number is 5 but I'm not positive as it may very from country to country especially considering when you are doing the counting.

Thanks for the help !!
Thanks,

Allan,
The link Alexis provides contains three entries where he downed an enemy aircraft. The RFC/RAF used the number five to confirm "Ace" status. I checked my favorite reference and a highly respected one at that, "Above the Trenches" by Shores, Franks, and Guest and Tone Bayetto is not included so I'd say he was not formally qualified as an Ace.
As an aside I'll add that the foregoing does in no way reduce my admiration and respect for him; the conditions these men endured and their sheer raw bravery in going to war in these primitive machines make them very special in my view, what a generation! Why not submit your Build as a "Display and Commemoration only" entry?
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks Lance,
Three was the number i came to as well based on the data Alexis had forwarded and considering the five number for qualification, I kinda figured that no, he was not an ace.
I want to build his a/c, he deserves it. They all had a hard, short life. Please see the end of my Lubery post  in "Under Construction"
I am currently re-reading "Wooden Crates/Gallant Pilots" by Elliot.
Thanks for your input Lance, always welcome.
Thanks,
Allan Buttrick
