WnW Albatros B.II old build - new propeller
« on: October 22, 2024, 11:04:35 AM »
A couple of years ago I built the WnW Albatros B.II and was happy with it. While walking past it as it sat in my display case, I couldn't help notice that the way I'd painted the laminated wood on the propeller, and how poorly done it was. There's nothing worse than odd looking propeller wood laminations (or poorly aligned turnbuckles) on a WW1 aircraft.

So after literally years of looking at this I finally said to myself "That's it!" and dug out the alternate propeller for that model, and painted it up to look the part. I did a bit of research on Reschke propellers, and gave it my best effort to fix my mistake and get the laminated wood to look like it should. I had to make a new rear hub from styrene, but I'm much happier with the overall look of the model now.

Once a model is finished, I've always thought that it should be left alone and the next effort would be better. But this one begged to be fixed with a propeller replacement.
Cheers,
Gary

New propeller painted up for the Albatros B.II model

The Reschke propeller was an option for the particular scheme of my aircraft.

My original pant job on the Garuda type - which looked poorly done in my humble opinion. Not sure why it took me years to finally fix it.

A lovely BII Gary. That original propellor doesn't look too bad to me, certainly better than some of my earlier efforts. But the new one looks spot on, so well worth that extra bit of effort.

Nice job on the new prop; it now compliments the model (which is lovely) beautifully.

ps - Can't understand why the old two seat Albie isn't more popular with modellers - it makes a beautiful model with the challenge of interesting surfaces to paint/recreate

Very nice upgrade on an already beautiful model Gary. Your re-work was well worth the effort!

Paul - you ask a good question, but I have to admit that the Albatros B.II model is the "wobbliest" of all the WnW kits I've built when it comes to sitting on it's landing gear. The legs are so spindly and have to support a fair bit of weight...and in my case the left side has even bowed a bit over time which has the model sitting at a very slightly odd angle (which is hard to fix). I'll have to ignore that...but did fix my coolant vent pipe which had apparently separated from the upper wing (after seeing it in my posted photo!).
Cheers,
Gary

Thatis a superb model Gary. Improving the prop will hopefully allow you to admire it as much as the rest of us - because I would have been proud enough with the older prop!
