Pfalz D.XII dual build. 1/72 Toko
« on: August 02, 2024, 01:58:08 AM »
Gentlemen,
Please excuse my absence from posting and comments for the last few months. I have been busy with work and life in general.  I have been following your excellent posts though.
My next project is a dual Pfalz D-XII build. I’ll be utilizing the 1/72 Toko kit for both. I’m also using some of the Part photo etch sets specific to this kit. My livery choice is the two schemes offered on my Paddinghaus decal set.

Construction began in the cockpit area. I used a homemade tool consisting of two #11 blades glued together to scribe the wood veneer strips. I was a little heavy handed here but it will barely be noticeable when closed.

I used the kit flooring and the PE seat, control box, fuselage bracing, etc. the kit floor will help keep everything aligned properly for installation.

Here’s the finished interior ready to close. I scratch built the hand pump and added control cables.
The kit engine is really nice. I omitted the PE wire harness to save for an exposed engine Fokker D-VII future build.

Numerous exterior details were added from spare PE. I tried to represent the fuselage connection seam with decal strip. This was not visible after priming though.

Current state of affairs is the silbergrau fuselage and unit colors are sprayed on. I’m now working on the elaborate PE radiators (43 pieces each!).

Thanks for looking in!

Tim

Nice choice, and very nice work so far, I'm loving the interior and engine.

Best of luck with the Peddinghaus decals, they don't have a great reputation......(although tbf I haven't used them myself).

I did one of these and finished it with the cabane struts partially dancing on air ( my standards were lower then) Hopefully you have heard of the reviews regarding the fit of the cabane struts but luckily this was the only issue I found in an otherwise good kit. Best of luck.

That Toko kit is quite fine, I only remember I had to cut and reshape the cabane struts (the kit part is coplanar, where in reality it should not be so) otherwise, no issues.
Great start, I will be watching your progress with huge interest.

Wowzer jumped ahead with this pair Tim  8)

Great work so far and love the two 'silver' schemes.
On my Pfalz and previous Roland I masked off a thin gap and then added a couple of extra layers of paint. (On the Pfalz I did it on the primer coat and the Roland is on the top coat) Easy to do and works effectively in 'Gentleman's scale'  ;)

Hey Tim, fast progress.
I used the Paddinghaus decals on my MvR and LvR triplanes (found in specific builds section). They work but are a little transparent in the white areas. Just a heads-up.
Thanks,
Allan Buttrick

Looking great so far, Tim, and glad to see you back! I was never really into these chunky a/c before, but since joining the forum my tastes have broadened considerably—I was never particuarly interested in Eindeckers until your and Gary's and Przemo's build threads got me turned on to them... now look at me, the dang things have taken over my life :-P

Nicely detailed and painted interior and engine. These are looking really great!

What could be better than a Pfalz under construction?.... Two Pfalz's under construction!
If you've built this kit (Toko/E.E.) before then I'm just being Capt. Redundant in mentioning what others have about the cabane struts, they do need some attention to function properly.  Also, and I'm afraid I may be a little late here, when placed against the schematic in the data file it looks like the fuselage scales out a little short???  But as has been noted, these drawings sometimes may not be 100% accurate?
I'm keeping and eye on this build, it looks like a fun one (and I'm interested in how the Paddinghaus decals work out, I've certainly heard mixed opinions on them).
Take care
Scott...

The main reason I purchased the Part Photo etch set for this project was to assemble the radiator. The kit part is quite adequately detailed but I thought I would jazz it up with the PE.

47 separate parts are going to be a real challenge to assemble.

A little over half way through and it’s not looking good!

Well… kinda looks as if it survived a blunt impact with a brick wall.  Good thing I saved the kit part. Bad news is I only have one. I’ll try to make a silicone mold and resin cast another.
Thanks for looking in!

Blimey Tim Fair play on putting together that radiator (I took one look at the parts on the etched brass PART sheet and thought 'not a chance'  ;) A thought that often crosses my mind when seeing what is offered on the sheets)

Wow, that's some brass sandwich! I too am frequently amazed by what the PE makers expect us to do. This was a game attempt, but sometimes the kit parts turn out ok....

Thank you Paul, Nigel. One thought is that I may take it apart and try to salvage the exterior part and scratch build the interior.  I’ll be home today to check on my silicone mold and attempt a resin cast.
More to come soon.
