Late entry - 1/48 Eduard moraine-saulnier type n

Thanks all… a question… perhaps for Brad as you’ve already done a lovely one of these! Any advice on the rigging? I know the wing doesn’t have a lot to connect to and perhaps Frank suggested it needed structural rigging.. I’m wondering if a few dabs of superglue gel would suffice for using elastic ? For some reason I have more success with elastic… and any suggestions on what works well in 1/48 scale (using either elastic thread or monofilament)? New experience for me.

Hi Matt! Indeed, my rigging material of choice is elastic, which bonds quickly with a small dab of superglue. A light touch with some superglue accelerator will make sure your rigging line stays in place.

As noted, elastic adds nothing to structural strength, but for a monoplane such as this one (and having done one of these before as you've kindly noted), structural strength isn't too much of a concern

Thanks all and for the advice, Alan and Brad - I've added a couple of brass pins so hopefully the wings will attach ok.

Also a small update.. now buttoned up and added a bit of colour to the linen. It seemed a bit pale given the varnish, castor oil, grime etc which would have given a darker hue. Not sure it's there but a start - the weathering will darken it further as well.

I'm heading back to Oz for 2 weeks so no more updates until I'm back, although I'm hoping to stock up on a few modelling supplies over this time so I can push forward on this.

Work has recommenced now I'm back from my trip home and progress is being made, although lots of mistakes are creeping in - a steep 1/48 scale learning curve!

I struggled with the roundels today - they seemed to resist conforming and, in my impatience, (not a useful trait when building WW1 model planes), I stuck them out on my balcony - who needs a hair dryer when its 50 degrees outside? but I got distracted on calls home and by the time I saved them I think they had essentially melted... next time I'm going to put my big boy pants on and mask these things...





I'll just keep adding decal solution and pricking the little bubbles.... slap some gloss on and see where we get to... I suppose at the extreme I could strip them and use masks. But I'm hoping with a few coats of gloss it will be resolved!

Like much of the world, I'm having supply chain problems - a Gaspatch order has gone MIA - which will need to be resolved in the not-too-distant future if I'm to finish this.... but this has turned up in the post...



perhaps I can add a late, late entry to Dave's memorial build while I resolve my tiny turnbuckle issues...? Administrators -would this be ok? And can I add the little Flying Razor to this thread?

Nice progress, love the cowling weathering. You can save the roundels with pin pricks and solvent, just takes time....

That's looking absolutely superb bar the roundels which I am sure you can sort out with your suggested approach. It's worth persevering......

Don't worry too much about the roundels - keep the pin pricks and decal setter going and it will get there in the end!

I do also like the cowling chipping - do you have any more pictures? What is your method?

Hi all

I haven't posted anything for a while, but progress is being made so this is a bit of a recap!

Here is the EV cockpit...





As an aside, this was the first time I've used Quinta decals - actually impressed, especially for 1/48. More 3D than PE and without the superglue fuss!

The little razor getting some colour - a lost of pre-shading fuss that was a waste of time but learnt some lessons on the application of yellow....



Now some masking.... not one of my strengths!



But now we have a little bumble bee...




And now its markings..



The bands look quite sharp to the naked eye but the close ups are a bit grim! I've lightly sanded the black bands to show a small amount of yellow peaking through here and there.

And I should give a shout out to Mike's wonderful PDF build log of the EV which has been an immense help - these are really a wonderful resource.

Brad - i know i owe you a response on the chipping.... just the hairspray technique. The chipping was quite extreme on this one - there's a photo in the DataFile as well as a profile which i assume Eduard may have based their profile on.



The N-Type is parked for the moment - these seemed quite weathered in real life - the photo makes it look a bit more extreme than it appears to the naked eye.



I'll leave it there - I'll try and post the progress on the EV wings tomorrow.

Fantastic finish, on both of them!

If I hadn’t got stuck in 1/72, I would have started with 1/48- this is a proof it really can look as good as 1/32, while still not being humongously large. Chipping is convincing too.
