Albatros DV - Ace of Hearts
« on: February 10, 2013, 12:30:12 AM »
This is my version of the WNW Albatros DV.
Georg Strasser's mount from Jasta 17. I think a lovely scheme and glad it has finally come out on the many 1/32 decal sheets for WNW's superlative kit. These markings are hand made decals.

The wood is oils and washes over Floquil Antique white. Then pin washed with raw umber to pick up the nail heads embossed with a gear cog. Both clear yellow and orange were then used to differentiate panels.

The figure is modified from Model Cellars "Werner Voss." I changed the head, stuck a cigarette in his mouth , original photo in Osprey's Albatros Aces-part 2 shows Georg smoking and I used expoxy putty to apply the leather gaiters he is wearing. A couple of medals on his chest complete the easy conversion.

I also noticed in the original photo that the winglet between the wheels was missing, so using the Smithsonian Albatross restoration publication's drawings, I replaced it with an axle and spreader bar. I also got the little cotter pins in that hold on the wheels. I'm also pround of the cowling retaining springs that I added!

This evocative shot , as the other three pictures, are the work of my good friend and burgeoning modeler, Tom Evens.
Any constructive thoughts, comments, discussion topics are, of course, welcome!
This is my first posting to this forum that I've come to enjoy and check daily!

KA,
Now, that's a great first posting, magnificent model! I am really impressed with your weathering effect, particularly around the wheels and struts. The "pin wash" worked very well, a technique I've been meaning to try but somehow never remember to do. Last, the wood effect is remarkable, and the varying shades of overspray really enhance the panel differentiation as you say.
Welcome here, and Thanks for sharing a truly beautiful "Albie" with us, one of my favorites.
Cheers,
Lance

Absolutely gorgeous vignette all around, KA! ;D  Great modeling on all fronts.  The Alby has a first-rate finish, and excellent weathering, particularly the landing gear.  The figure is extremely well-executed and painted. I assume that's your work as well.

Welcome to the forum!  What an outstanding introduction! ;)  Thanks for sharing your superb work with us.  I look forward to learning from you.  Well done.

Regards,

Bob

Welcome to the forum, KA!  What a spectacular introduction.  This is one of the prettiest D.V's I've seen yet and that figure is pure perfection.  It doesn't get any better than this.
Cheers,
Bud

Welcome to our forum, Ken. I have seen your Albatros a few hours before on hyperscale. Tis is simply one of the most impressing Albatros I have ever seen in terms of painting and weathering. Your woodwork is fantastic and the light shading, for example on the jacket of Strasser is a class of its own.

Congratulations!

Dirk

Absolutely brilliant in all aspects, the overall finish of the Albatros is superb with perfect wood work and excellent weathering, a true masterpiece. And the figure is another masterpiece which really enhances the entire scene, the B & W photo is magic.

Welcome to the forum and I hope to see plenty more of your work soon, this has been one very spectacular introduction.

Ken, excellent work and great to see all those particular techniques used. With the wood effect decal explosion out there its nice to see the "old" way of doing it executed so well.

As the others said, KANiles, that's quite a triumphant introduction. Beautiful bird!

Any chance you've got in-progress photos so that you could post an abbreviated build log? I'd love to see a step-by-step of your weathering and wood work. I'm sure you'd have a captive audience here.

Looking forward to some more,

Lindsay

That is really very nice, not only the Albatros but the figure and base really set it off.

I'd like to know how you did the base as well.
