1/72 Nieuport 27 RFC
« on: January 14, 2024, 10:48:36 PM »
Afternoon all

I got a bit bogged down with the group of Tripes I've been working on and then a succession of chest infections meant I wasn't very enthusiastic about modelling anything so I started flipping through some old issues of Cross & Cockade and came across an article about the RFC's Nieuport 27's (Specifically Capt. E S Meek) Now I can't really resist a Nieuport at the best of times, but the last of the line of 'V strutters', well it wasn't long before I was rummaging through the boxes of kits to see what I had  ;D

I know Roden produced a version of the 27, but I didn't have one. I did have a 24 though which was nearly the same ;) Unfortunately the spare tail feathers had already been removed from the box, but not too difficult to make those and a spare Camel U/C would provide the split axle needed so everything was good to go.

Typically I couldn't resist adding some interior and a few extra details here and there. The 'boiler plate rivets' were quickly removed and new stitching and other bits and bobs added. Gentleman Meek was supplied by my mate Nigel and various decals were sourced from the spares box. The rather unusual number on the fin came from an old sheet of Letraset I sourced on Fleabay

I'll post a few in progress shots later, but here's how she turned out.

Overall top view ( I decided after rigging that the light green was too pale so this is the revised version repainted AFTER rigging which was exciting) :o

Last one for the moment

One thing that interested me about this aircraft was the small support strut added the the leading edge of the 'V' strut in much the same way as the later DVa Albatros'. As the weight and power grew it seems like they ran into the same wing flutter issues and, as you know, for the next Nieuport a more conventional dual strut arrangement was used (I really must get around to a 28 one of these days) ::)

Thanks for looking and feel free to comment

Oh, my goodness I love this model... I recently finished reading Mike Westrop's magnificent book on Naval 6 and have been siezed with a nearly overpowering desire to kitbash a 1:32 Nieuport 17bis (after I finish the N.16 and the E.I, of course). This little gem just added fuel to the fire!

Thanks chaps.

A few added details for the interior from stretched sprue with a new plywood style seat from etch. (I later decided that the cross bar for the instruments looked a bit bulky so this was also replaced after the fuselage was built with stretched sprue and a couple of instruments attached

Pleased with how the gun mount ended up (made from scraps of sanded down 5 thou plastic card and brass wire) For this one I managed to add the bowden cable 'trigger' from some stripped computer wire.

Last little detail at the back of the aircraft was the tailskid. Had some fun with this filing and soldering a couple of bits of brass together even if it's never seen when the model is displayed  ::)

Lovely. And, as we all agree, you can never have too many Nieuports.
I love this combination of French 5 colour camp and British roundels.
