1/32 Scale PfalzD3a
« on: December 31, 2023, 09:45:16 AM »
December 30, 2023

This is my last offering of 2023 or my first of 2024.  This will be my first offering for my customer this year and I think this is going to be WNW number 15 that I have built for him.  The best of both worlds.  I get to build excellent kits but do not have to find a place for them.  He chose Max Holtzen's color scheme and I look forward to it.  I have built for him since 1997.  This will be a straight out of the box build.

The build starts with the interior and there are no surprises here.  The color of the interior is grey-green which means RLM2.  At least that what it means to me.  A little weathering to the interior and then on to the engine.  As is with all WNW kits I have built, the molding is crisp and the parts almost fall together.  My completion date should be a about mid-January.

This is a lovely kit, I managed to get one at Telford at a not too extortionate price. Looking forward to seeing this one progress.

I'm with Nigel, really looking forward to this one. I'd love to find one of these kits, but the idea of paying four or five times the original price puts them waaaay out of my price range.

That looks like a fantastic kit.  I would love to build a Wingnut Wings model one day.

^I'm with them: would love one but highly unlikely to get one any time soon. I'm so jealous of both you and your customer!

I love me a D.III so I'm very excited to follow along.

The main framework is complete and there were no surprises.  As with all WNW kits built out of the box, this is almost a shake and bake kit model.

I skip around when I build so the upper wing was my first goal.  The silver is S&J spray, left unpolished.  Both upper and lower surfaces were sprayed with Future Floor Wax and the decals were applied.  A coat of Future sealed the decals.  Some under wing shutter work and the top wing is complete.

Next was the engine.  The upper and lower halves were spray painted.  All of the other parts were hand painted just prior to attachment.  Again, no surprises.  All of the parts are clearly marked and the fit is excellent.  The entire engine was built even though most of it will disappear into the fuselage to show the excellent attention to detail of the kit.

The next step will be to detail the cockpit area and I could have the fuselage closed up this week.  For those of you who want this kit, I can highly recommend it.  The potential for super detailing will be limited only by your desire to inflict pain upon yourselves.

Thank you for the fine compliments.   I could have another progress shot or two later today.

Clipping right along as usual, Dennis! You're a bad influence, now I'm thinking of getting the Roden kit to add to my slowly-expanding 1:32 replacement stash (having given the 1:48 & 1:72 kits to my boys). These were truly beautiful aeroplanes.

A shot of the interior under construction.  The interior is very well constructed but here is where the modeller must exercise extreme care.  The fit does not allow for much variation and the interior must be installed exactly or the fuselage halves will not  close up.

The second shot is of the fuselage, wings and under carriage with no glue.  That is how precise these kits are.

The third photo is the interior glued into place.  It will joined by the other half of the fuselage and any putty work will be done.
