Pfalz DVIII - Aviattic kit build with pre-production test parts
« on: October 07, 2023, 02:17:13 AM »
I've been quiet in terms of builds because I've been working on a test build of the upcoming Aviattic Pfalz DVIII kit. The build is being done using pre-production test parts, the purpose being to see how it all goes together to see what needs tweaking before the production run begins. Richard (Aviattic proprietor) is happy for me to share pics of the in progress work, even though these aren't the final production parts. I know some things have been tweaked/changed since I got these parts.

Here's the engine and interior. The engine is an updated 3D printed version of the Siemens Halske which is really easy to assemble. The interior is nicely detailed with some incredibly delicate 3D parts (courtesy of GasPatch).

It's been very interesting to get an insight into the final stages of the kit's development. Aviattic is a one-man band and Richard has to work with outside contractors, and coordinating all the different elements of the kit is like herding cats. I am definitely not starting a kit company. I'll stick to building them!

Here's where I am up to. The decals are still under development, so I have assembled the main fuselage parts, painted the components and glossed everything prior to decalling. So there's no weathering yet (which will be subtle) and the parts are shinier than they will be when completed. When I have the decals I will post some updates.

There will be a range of marking options in the kit and not all are silbergrau. Despite its limited service, there were some colourful schemes and I'm doing this one as a Jasta 29 plane. I think the final decals will include the comet marking (TBC) which will look spectacular.

Thanks for a little taste of what , I'm sure, will be a great kit.

I am unspeakably envious of you for this opportunity Nigel. Mikael Carlson's reproduction made me aware of this type and awakened feelings within me (!!) and I would love one of these kits. Maybe Santa will be good to me!

In the meantime I'm very excited to follow your build.

Thanks for the kind comments guys. This will look very nice when done, I am really looking forward to getting the decals.

I know what you mean Zac. When Richard said he was doing this one (many years ago) I was very much "meh". But seeing the flying replica, and also the range of colour schemes available, has got me quite excited about this kit. So I have my own on order, and it's a pleasure to be able to build this one as well. Fingers crossed Santa is kind to you...... ;)

Incredibly detailed parts on this kit. Your excellent paintwork only serves to enhance all this nice detail.
A pleasure to see. If only it were 1/72!

Hi Nigel, when I saw your brief piece in the new Cher Ami I was hoping you'd be posting some more in-depth stuff here. And like everybody else, I was kind of ambivalent about this kit at first, but, now that I see it I find myself lusting in my heart for one (as Jimmy Carter so famously said).

This is looking superb! I'm guessing the fuselage halves are 3D printed due to the print lines running through which is a shame and not easily removed.

The fuselage halves are resin but I think they are either 3D printed in resin or cast from a 3D printed master (I don't know how the process works). These are pre-production test parts and there has been some refinement to the final parts based on what has been found in the build so far. I know Richard wasn't completely happy with the test resin parts.

The colour schemes that are in the kit are looking very good, I am sure you will do your usual fantastic job on this one when you have it.

Dutch,

On which site are the issues of Cher Ami available?

Thanks,
