The trick would be using a transparent glaze, which would allow the decal colors to show through without obscuring them. If I were going to try doing this I'd use a mix of Vallejo's transparent green & smoke; AK Interactive and Tamiya both make equivalents I think.

(I'm a landscape painter, and artists have been referring to this technique as "glazing" for the past couple of centuries. I see modelers call it "filtering" nowadays :-)

Davos,Nigel thank you for your advice and other research, I tried with an ink type "Shader" from Ak but not green but olive and here is the result what do you think ... personally I find it much better, here are some pictures of this test (hummm rather definitive as a test ...) ;) ;)

Wow! An amazing improvement, Frédéric! And that AK color is a perfect match for the one in my “theoretical” Photoshop paint-over.

yes Dutch, that ink did the job, I'm pleasantly surprised, thanks again for the tip, here's the current state of the DVII (I've just put it in the cross and on its legs)
here's some pics, you can see the change ...

Wow!  Brilliant ( or should I say dulled) effects on toning down the lozenge coloring.  That’s an excellent build of the D-VII.

Thanks for sharing.

The effect works great! I also use those Mig Shaders, I find them very effective.

Looks wonderful!  I'm enjoying the lozenge discussion and all of these great tips too.
