I was there just a couple of weeks ago for a conference, but didn't have a camera. Regrettably some of the exhibits are getting rather shabby. I would have happily paid to go in.

@Des: if you need close ups or measurements of the Caudron, let me know :-)

@ermeio: Yep, they sometimes close the first floor off because of lack of museum guards. Pretty annoying. Next time when you are in Brussels, let me know. Maybe we can meet up at the museum :-)

Cheers

Thank You, Flip
I will let you know in advance

er me

Well, Flip
It is very likely that I'm in brussels from december 10 to 12.
I'm afraid I don't have enough time to visit the museum, but i'll do my best.

Hi,

Used to visit this museum regularly several years ago...the Halberstadt was intact then,

Does anyone know what progress is being made on it's restoration?

Phillipe's photos show the fuselage minus the wings and propeller....thank you Phillipe :)

A google search shows a chap who seemed to be involved with the restoration...he has a website and a few pictures but it has all gone very quiet.

Would be interested to hear if any work is still being carried out  and what the state of play is?

Thank you my friends.  :)

And now maybe these pictures will be useful for someone who will be making Zeppelin scratch build.  ;)
As part of war reparations Belgium got this airship.

I think this engine also belongs to this Zeppelin

When I see pictures like that, I try to put myself in the shoes of the pilot that would be seeing that technology for the first time. Even though it looks heavy to us, was the pilot walking around slack jawed at all the incredible technology available to him? Was this the carbon fibre, glass cockpit, fly by wire bird of it's day? I bet he looked around and marvelled that there was so little wood. "What a fascinating modern age we live in!"

My friends.
I agree with you that the construction of our point of view it looks heavy. But as wrote LindsayT for pilots of that time it is very modern, in comparison with steam ships with their point of view, it is very light, openwork design. I just admire the execution of its openwork structure of the fuselage. In those days precise making fuselage of the airship was a real big challenge.
