CSM Bristol Scout 1264
« on: August 16, 2023, 09:46:10 PM »
I've been in enforced lurk mode for quite a while due to losing my password when I changed computers and the password reset process not working for me. I finally got around to asking Dave to fix my account which he did, many thanks for that.

This is my most recent build of the CSM Bristol Scout, a lovely kit. My first attempt at a CDL finish and after a fair bit of trial and (much) error it turned out OK I think. I did this build with the bombs attached, and David Bremner (who built the flying replica of this aircraft) told me they cut a hole in the cockpit floor so his grandad could see what he was trying to drop bombs on. However, it was too late for me to add this as I'd already finished the build.

Many of you may have seen this on Facebook so I hope it's ok to add here as well.

Egads, what a beautiful job, Nigel... wish you'd been able to do a build log of it; I especially love the effect of translucency on the undersides of the wings. Masterful workmanship!

Thanks very much Dave, I will try to keep a log of my next build and share it on here.

The translucent CDL effect was built up in layers - CDL first, then the roundels were sprayed on using masks held slightly off the surface. I used coloured inks (Citadel) rather than paint for the roundels to help the translucent feel. Then blended  those in with a light layer of CDL. I used a brownish/grey for the spars, then masked off the rib tapes and used the same colour for those. Then a light overspray of CDL and final weathering on top.

It took a bit of practice to get it right and I was not helped by spraying the roundels blue/white/red on my first attempt. While admiring the effect I then realised they should be red/white/blue for the scheme I was doing, so I had to strip the whole wing and start again!

Hi Nigel

Good to see you posting the Scout on here as well. Love the finish you've got on this one and hopefully see it on the next SIG stand

Cheers

I saw this on Facebook and was impressed. Seeing it here is even better. Stunning finish and it has come at a time when I can still shamelessly try to copy some of the techniques.  8)

Superb finishing on this.  I really like the oil staining on the fuselage and the roundel shadowing.  Excellent!

Very nice Nigel
You really captured the grungy well used but fully functional look. I too agree that the translucent fabric effects are very realistic.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, much appreciated.

Rick, if you have any questions, please ask away. I used some advice from Mike Norris in his build log, which was to glue the top wing to the cabane struts and then use a (not too tight) rubber band to hold the wings in place at their ends. This allows you to pop the interplane struts in place without them falling out the other end.

You may have made a few mistakes along the way to get the CDL effect, but the result is truly outstanding, as is the staining and general wear effect. A superb model.

Stephen.

Thanks Dave, Gary and Stephen. This was a good learning process, I'm using my retirement to get more proficient with the airbrush.

Beautiful model of a beautiful biplane. Your CDL finish looks superb, all the trial and error worked out very well in the end. It's a lovely, realistic looking model.
