WnW 1/32 Fokker E.II "Max Immelmann"
« on: July 26, 2023, 07:42:50 AM »
After picking up the kit of Max Immelmann's Fokker E.II during the last rash of available Wingnut Wings hit the hobby shops, I broke open the bag containing the resin figure to examine the quality of the casting. I did paint it up and posted it here: https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=13929.0

Realizing I'd basically started the model by opening the package, I decided to put it on the bench and work on it alongside of finishing my recent E.IV model.

I did notice a different in the quality of the parts with this later stamping compared to earlier releases I have of the Eindecker models. More flash, and some small parts weren't properly formed - more later.

So here are a few photos of the work on the propeller, which I usually start with. The propellers were fairly dark on these aircraft, but there was definitely evidence of lamination on the Germania propellers. To mimic this I base coated the part in a Tamiya acrylic tan colour, masked it and sprayed on a darker shade. After a gloss coat, I added/touched up the curved lines with Vallejo acrylic mixed to match, then added a diluted oil paint to stain it darker and add a wood grain look. It took a couple of oil paint applications before I was pleased with the dark colour.

Cheers,
Gary

That prop is gorgeous Gary, I'll need to try that method for myself.

Well, Steve - one of the legs for the seat didn't quite make it properly in the molding process and I had to add one using styrene rod. Also the small spent-cartridge deflector had not been formed properly, so luckily there was a spare part A15 from my previous E.IV kit. And there's more flash on this one than the same sprues from my E.IV kit.

The engine was airbrushed Flat Black, and as with the previous build I added a metallic look using Uschi metal polishing powder Steel type. For the ignition wires I used Mike Norris' methos of EZ-Line, which works great. As can be seen in the photos...one of the lines was knocked off, so that was repaired just now.
Cheers,
Gary

Terrific start Gary with you customary magical painting skills!

I found the top of the fuselage halves on this kit bowed downwards on mine and needed a lot of work to get the top level.

Engine colours are spot on. Love the variations that give each part a distinctive look.

This is the case with all three models I've tackled so far, Richie. At least for this one I took a bit more time to try and align the spine when setting the glue.

Work on the cockpit included adding a seat harness from HGW and a few switch handles from the ANYZ 3D printed parts. I enhanced the pulsimeter with a clear reservoir on top, and also added a copper wire for the impulse line to the gage on the panel. The interior rigging is EZ-Line with 1/48 Gaspatch resin turnbuckles.

Cheers,
Gary

I'm lost for words. This is inspirational and aspirational, and to an exquisite level of detail. I'm rather enjoying this and the Eindecker purchase itch is getting harder to avoid scratching!

Nice start on this, Gary.  I actually didn't realize you started another Fokker E type.
