As I now have 3 WNW and 2 Roden Albatroses in the stash I am very happy to see this thread back! Lovely work Bertl, I really like the way you are able to render all the small details so precisely (like the aileron hinges).

Great work on all your Albatri! And good luck with the postage across Germany!

Lovely work Bertl. I especially like the contrast of the early and late wing markings and camouflage.
Thanks,

Thank you so much for your kind comments; I really appreciate them.

Unfortunately, it will still be a few months (?  ::) ) before I can post any further progress on the three Albatros D.V and D.Va models.
The reason for this is that two earlier Albatros models have snuck in and jumped the line.
An Albatros D.III in the markings of Werner Voss from his time with Jasta 5 (I'm building this one for a very good old friend)
and an Albatros D.II in the markings of Otto Gerbig from Jasta 14 (I'm building this one for myself).

Since the construction steps for both models are nearly 100% identical up to a certain point, they will be built simultaneously.
However, the D.III by Werner Voss will incorporate some WingnutWings components, such as the upper and lower wings and the horizontal stabilizer.
Essentially a hybrid between Roden and Wingnut.
We will see how far these plans can be realized, because swapping parts isn't as easy as originally assumed.

Well, here are a few pictures of the two earlier Albatrose models.
Both are kits from Roden, the D.II with a few parts from Encore.
I won't be doing a separate build report, but I might post a few pictures here and there.
I'm actually a bit further along than the pictures show.

I'm pleased to see these ones sneak in, as I plan to do both a Roden DIII and an Encore DII at some point, so these will be inspirational for me. Lovely work so far.

Let's continue for a bit with the Albatros D.II.

The beautifully sculpted parts of the WingnutWings Albatros D.V/D.Va kit clearly show the screw connection between the tailplane and the fuselage at the nose of the tailplane.

Roden, on the other hand, believes this isn't necessary.
So he leaves it out entirely, even in 1/32 scale:

Well, I want to have it on my D.II.
So it's time to do it myself again.
The first step is to measure the metal plate of the Wingnut screw connection and transfer it to the fins of the Roden model.
That's a piece of cake.
Now it gets trickier, because the fin needs to be drilled through on the correct side with a 0.7 mm drill bit.
A small aluminum tube with a 0.7 mm outer diameter and 0.5 mm inner diameter is now inserted into this hole and, with the appropriate protrusion, secured using low - viscosity superglue.

The inner diameter of the 0.7-mm-thick aluminum tube must now be drilled out from 0.5 mm to 0.6 mm.
This can only be done gradually, using intermediate sizes in increments of 0.01 mm, because the wall thickness will ultimately be reduced to just 0.05 mm.

A suitable 0.6 mm thick resin screw is now inserted into the 0.6 mm hole.
This holds on its own and does not need to be glued.

On the model, the elevator fin is now placed flush against the fuselage and pressed lightly against it .......

...... so that the sawed-off end of the aluminum tube leaves a mark on it.

I then drilled out this mark with a 0.8 mm drill bit and lightly deburred the edge with a mini cone cutter.

It fits!

And the opposite side as well.
