Following on from post #404, equipping the Albatros with flare cartridges and flare gun.

The pistol and the flare cartridges are now finished.
The flare gun is one of two converted wingnut flare guns, but you already know that.

This flare gun represents the ?Hebel? (lever) flare gun model that was widely used at the time.
The barrel was tilted by means of a "Hebelverschlu?" (lever lock).
The pistol was introduced into the Imperial Army around 1894.
It was made of steel with a blued finish, the grips were made of wood.
The weight of the pistol was about 1800 grams and the length about 360mm.

On the decal sheet of the WingnutWings Hannover CL.II I found the matching decals for the flare cartridges.
However, the decals are all printed in white - on the original they were in the color of the respective cartridge filling.
Since I wanted to represent the two long flare cartridges (red and green illuminated parachute) with the correct color of the labels, they had to be painted with a glaze.

This went quite well with the painting, but the decals were harder as a result and could only be molded to the curves of the signal cartridges with the use of decal softener.

The primers pressed into the cardboard sleeves (cartridges) with bearing and extractor claw collar were made of brass on the original.
This was represented on the model by means of a resin screw.
The actual hexagon head of the screw was filed down so that basically only the washer remained.
This was glued into the aluminum tube and painted with a brush in brass paint.

Here are the flare cartridges together with the flare gun.
And as you can see here in the sequence of pictures, the signal pistol can of course also be loaded with the cartridges  ;D

..... and this is how it will look later on the model - currently only attached for the pictures, of course nothing is fixed with glue yet.
The mirror on the fuselage has now been replaced by a better modeled mirror (See post #414).

Please don't take this too seriously with the flare gun and the shell casings.
I love these little details and when my head is full of thoughts that keep me busy, these little fiddly jobs bring me back down to earth.

Dear Bertl, I thought that you were gradually reaching the peak of modelling. But you prove with every post that the zenith is far from being reached. It's simply incredible what you create again. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us. The realisation of mirrors and cartridge cases is absolutely fantastic !

Greetings
Joerg

Hello Joerg, Nigel, Zac, Alexis and xan, thank you very much for your kind comments.  ;D

Well, not much has happened with the remaining Albatros models over the last few weeks.
A few engine parts were assembled and sprayed with a little paint.
The engines in the picture belong to a Roden Albatros D.III (Xaver Danhuber, Jasta 76), a Roden Albatros D.III (Werner Voss), which will get a fully detailed Wingnut Mercedes engine, an Albatros D.V (Otto Kissemberth, Jasta 23), and the rest (2x Mercedes D.IIIa, 1x Mercedes D.III) are for the three Albatrosses discussed in this thread.

I don't actually spend most of my free time on model building, but rather on my second hobby - motorbikes.
Currently, it's this beautiful Ducati - the bike is 24 years old and has been unused for a little over six years and should now look like it did on the first day.

Looking forward to seeing how you approach these engines. Batch building seems like a very sensible idea, but it's something I have never been able to discipline myself to do!

Love that bike! I am a great fan of all Italian bikes and cars, although I gave up bikes many years after too many crashes. Owned Alfa Romeos for many, many years though, now driving an Abarth 595.

I'm on the lookout for a new bike, Bertl.
Maybe I will go back to another R1250GS or perhaps something more agile...not sure.
Love your 996. I bet she goes round bends on rails.

No need for me to say how good you're at making models, we already know!

Take care and be safe on them roads.

Hi Nigel,

Yes, Italian vehicles (primarily motorcycles) are a weakness of mine; I love them. They just have a certain flair that other motorcycles don't convey.
Years ago, I had an Alfa Romeo 147, a nice little car... but I didn't have much luck with it, it was in the repair shop relatively often  :-\

I also had my eye on the Fiat Abarth 595/695 in 2019 when I was deciding on a new car, but in the end I went for a Mazda MX-5 RF - a real fun car  :-*

Hi Bob,

Looking for a new bike is always something special?reason usually stays at home, and gut feeling rules the day  ;)

I hope you found what you were looking for?

I wish you safe travels and lots of fun on your bike.

My yellow Duc is back on the road again. It cost me some money, a few new parts, and many hours of work in my garage, but hey?it's worth it.

I haven't been idle here over the last few weeks either.
I built this Albatros D.III (OAW) for a fellow model builder friend of mine.
It's the Roden kit #608.
It requires quite a bit of work and time to fix the mistakes, but it makes for a nice model.

I have built this model in several stages and will not assemble it completely.
My model-building friend will then complete it himself.
The partially assembled model will be shipped across Germany as a package?I hope it works out.

The slanted fuselage band is painted, the Iron Crosses are from a Wingnut kit.
Unfortunately, all of my Roden decals broke in (warm) water.

The Flugzeugstoff decals on the wings are from Gothaforce.
As the Roden wings have a slightly different contour and also slightly (minimally) different rib spacing than the Wingnut wings - which is why I couldn't use the matching contour decals from Aviattik.

This Albatros represents the aircraft flown by Lt. Franz Xaver Danhuber, who flew it for only a very short time with Jasta 76b.

I have also continued working on the three remaining Albatros aircraft that this thread is actually about.
The wings of the models are currently under construction.
The lower wing belongs to the D.V 1187/17 of VzFw Bansmer Jasta 10, the upper wing to the (OAW) D.Va of Kest4, and the middle wing to the (OAW) D.Va 6633/17 of Michael Sigmann.

The upper wing of Michael Sigmann's aircraft is almost complete.
The eyelets for the wing cables were again made from 0.09 mm silver wire.
