DaddyO,
If you can find some close-ups or blow-ups of shots of wing roundels (both French and RFC) you'll see that most of them are anything but perfect, and are sometimes somewhat ragged. I know, I know, this defies our logic of what it's supposed to look like, but it's the simple truth. Something hard to pull and NOT make it look like sloppy modeling.

Too bad about the clear center-section decal, I had high hopes that would be successful.

Yep worth reiterating that they were hand painted generally and the quality depended on the ability of the person wielding the brush. (Doing a fair bit of sign writing in my day job, the little irregularities are what makes the work 'attractive' to a customer)

Almost finished the respray now so hopefully get this wrapped up soon.  ;D

Paul

ps - I did resurrect the original Nieuport that was languishing in the box and rubbed down the old finish, re-primed and have now given a coat of silver so maybe there will be two nearing completion (Quite fancy and Italian scheme so I'll have a look at what decals are available . . . )

The camo really looked great so I am looking forward to the re-paint and of course the second Silver Bird!

Looking great, I love what you've done with the engine and struts in particular (I do think the Eduard kit engine is a little anaemic).

I also like your choice of markings (I went with the same scheme way back when, when i built my Eduard kit, though mine was straight OOB).

Thanks guys  :)

Nice job Brad - Did you use any covering over the centre section or just left it open?

Hi Paul - as I was building this one out of box, I left it open with no clear covering.

An option for clear covering may be 0.05" clear plastic sheet, which I think is part of the evergreen sheet lineup? It should bond with white glue. It won't be seamless, but it's an option, I suppose.

Cheers,

OK, absolutely crazy idea, but would Saran-Wrap/cling film work?  Stretch it, spread it on, cut out with a scalpel?

Just an idea.

What about Micro clear? Mike Norris got great results on a1/32 window for his Be2c. It should set up relatively thin and if it spans a 1/32 window it should work in the Nieuport wing space.

I seem to remember that Scotch Tape, The Glossy Clear Type, has been used successfully. I am sure that there are many methods that would work!

Rick, I was thinking of that or packing tape.
Steve, are you talking about the Micro-Scale product that is like very refined white glue?

Yup WD that's the stuff. Check out Mike Norris' Be2c build. It worked well.

Okay colours back on and fresh new decals from Printscale have been applied without any hitches so back to where we were a week ago  ;D

Thanks for the heads up about the glossy Scotch tape (I didn't even know they made a glossy version) Off to WH Smiths to see if I can locate some today to try out

(I'll post a pic of both machines later)

Thanks Prz  ;D

Here's the first attempt after removing the decals sanding down

And here's where we are as of today with both of them. I'm waiting for the Italian decals to arrive, but I've added the wing undersides and fin stripe in Scale 75 acrylic since I was painting the rudder stripe of the other one

Final pic is of a quick test of the Scotch tape crystal that was recommended. I just slapped a piece on and trimmed with a scalpel to see how it looked

The packing tape/scotch tape idea is brilliant!  I need to build an Eduard Nieuport and will definitely use this technique and all the other little things Paul has done.  Great work.
